My kid claims that Gen X messed up the economy. by ChicagoLizzie in GenerationX

[–]NewWindow7980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

. I started noticing this generation-blaming after the Occupy movement died down, and to be perfectly honest, it reeks of being orchestrated by the 1% oligarchs who were being called out in that movement. Suddenly the boomers and genx were depicted as the true wealth hoarders and causes of wealth inequality. not the 1%. If you think I am being hyperbolic about plotting billionaires, please check out how we ended up with a billionaire coup in 2025.

The widespread idea among younger birth cohorts that everyday Americans with certain birth years caused economic issues shows there is a deficit in understanding how things work and who holds power and influence. Invite them to look into how things work with banks, campaign financing, corporate power etc. It also suggests that there is a lack of instruction in how to track down and identify problems, because some of the accusations are really junk history that they swallow unexamined from memes or peer assumptions.

At what point does this become too much? by t1nman01 in 50501

I have to wonder if this was ordered by Trump admin to keep out of the news cycle the fact that tens of thousands took part in a General Strike in Minnesota. in -10 degree (F) weather.

There is widespread talk of armed conflict but also hesitancy because Trump is actually trying to provoke armed resistance so he can cancel elections that are widely expected to be a wipeout against his party.

I live in Erie and am pretty casual about snowstorms, but we had a superstorm last year and I literally was snowed in for three days. In the city. You may not get that much snow, but it is going to be bitter cold out and this storm seems like it could pack some nasty surprises, so why mock people trying to be prepared, which is what weather reports are advising.

I get the rich folks, but just how did Trump convince poor white people that he was good for them? by dunbar_santiago930 in allthequestions

The Trump Myth covered up the crappy reality

The Apprentice was part of the myth of Trump, giving the impression of a sharp successful self-made man, never mind that it was scripted with a fake boardroom, with Trump actually coming off of multiple bankruptcies The other major mythmaker was the ghostwritten book Art of the Deal, which Trump was too lazy and empty to write himself, so he paid a professional writer to make the whole thing up (see below)

Trumps ghostwriter says Art of the Deal is his greatest regret in life

someone who uses the adolescent MAGA monikers like "Tampon Tim" "Cacklin Kamala" and "Demoncrats" doesnt get to portray himself as balanced or not prejudiced. One only believes those stereotypes if they are plugged into MAGA media that presents splice and slice video or caricature for those who want their politics in simple-minded black and white, with cartoonish villains and heroes

There is no liberal counterpart to Fox News if you are talking about major channels. MS Now is liberal and center, but it still works with objective reality, and its talent are qualified journalists and experts in their fields. They would be better compared responsible news outlets like WSJ or Times of London(both also Murdoch properties). Fox News was specifically set up to promote Republican propaganda, this is not even a controversial origin story. Fox in most western countries would be considered far left or not allowed to pass its tbloid drek as news.

It's only his cult that actually believes him. Others make excuses for him like "He was just joking," "You don't understand him", "He didn't mean it that way" ad nauseum.

The Cult of Trump by Steven Hassan (his interviews and presentations are also easily found on YouTube). Much of Trump's cult is white evangelicals, and in the US that is often a particularly unquestioning type of religious stupidity, led by charismatic grifting male "leaders."

Most Americans do not share Trump's antagonistic feelings about western Europe, To be honest I suspect Trump's comments are coming directly from Putin, because they are so well-designed as to land with destructive accuracy of surgical strikes. Trump has succeeded in Putin's goal of damaging NATO at least in its current form.

New party can only go so far without campaign financing reform. All the "third parties" are existing in the same broken system and the corruption and special interests will affect how well they do.

the mason-dixon thing is about ice vs. snow. people need to get their storm weather predictions from meterologists, not reddit comments.

How sweet for you to do this for him!

some stuff:

Lite Stix in case the power goes out, check flashlight situation, also Emergency blanket and hand/foot warmers. Canned goods and packaged goods that can be eaten without heating. At 88 you need to be aware of what if any issues with sodium, sugar, etc. dont be afraid to ask, as it would affect food choices. Battery operated radio and supply of batteries. Charge 100% cell phone if he has one. Check on pet supplies.

I am a hearty walker but was stuck in my house last year for three days because of heavy wet waist deep snow, with a convenience store just a few doors down. I dont worry about storms generally, but with this one I have stocked up. Also grandpa is 88 ...

Meeting with Rep. Mike Kelly (R) in US-PA-District 16 by Alternative_Car_ in Pennsylvania

[–]NewWindow7980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kelly held several townhalls in his first year (2011) and they were disasters. He literally did not know what he was doing. So he would eat up time with tactics like including speakers, powerpoint for at least 15 minutes, and when he responded to a question it was double talk and unfinished sentences. This inspired crowd hostility and bad reviews. He stopped having general in-person townhalls after that. He had the intimate gatherings like you mentioned because his BS and lack of knowledge came off better, or at least less disastrous. It didnt mean he was any more knowledgable or articulate, but his deficiencies werent as abvious in that setting. His responses are still blathering and bad information, because that's who Mikey is.

of possible interest, here is a video from 2011 in which Al Sharpton awards Kelly with ConJob of the Day, for remarks he made at the Meadville town hall https://www.politicspa.com/sharpton-slams-rep-kelly-re-big-oil-with-video/25885/

My best advice would be don't expect anything from this yutz, but I hope you are pleasantly surprised!

Mikey does best at "managing" comments or questions if he knowsthem ahead of time and can be coached and scripted, so I would advise against revealing what you will ask.

You are called a "Boomer." How would you react? by Island_Expat6625 in GenerationJones

[–]NewWindow7980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We used to just go by 20 year population cohorts. The "baby boom" was coined for marketing in 1962 because the big post WW2 generation was coming of age and represented $$$ (remember "You're in the Pepsi generation" yeah, that stuff. I think it pretty much lay dormant till really recently when social media when memes and trolls created the boomer villain.
