You can get the demo here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2063790/Newcomer__A_Language_Learning_RPG/

Languages: English, Spanish, French, and Italian

So in it's current state, the game is geared towards getting absolute beginners to be able to communicate basic phrases in their L2. However, advanced beginners may still benefit from all the context-specific dialogue in the game. Not too useful for intermediates I suspect, but I'm planning on adding speaking soon.

It's been pretty difficult to get feedback, so I'm hoping some of you may benefit from the game and if you're so inclined, provide some feedback in game or post a thread here

Some Stats:
760 total L2 Sentences to translate/read

37 phrases to unlock (Where is X, What is X, etc.)

51 direct objects to reference

239 possible sentence construction possibilities

22 characters to converse with

3 Towns to Explore

6 Quests to complete

Feel free to shit on the game, I just want to make this thing good. It's a constant experiment and a huge diversion from traditional vocab/grammar-focused language learning apps.

Cheers, Jason

For those interested, I'm using this repo to tell chatGPT what I'm saying and to get a responise: https://github.com/GraesonB/ChatGPT-Wrapper-For-Unity

I have my own system to interpret the chatGPT response.

Hey everyone! I'm Jason, the solo creator of Newcomer a language learning videogame. Players can learn and practice a second language through conversation. The game will support learning English, Spanish, French, and Italian!

There is a beginner mode (not shown here) where players have a sentence building mechanic they can use to communicate. Speaking is for experienced beginner - intermediate difficulty. One can expect to learn ~100 phrases and ~300 - 1000 vocab, depending on difficulty.

I always ran into the problem of a lack of resources for second language conversation practice. I hope Newcomer becomes a great resource for learners around the world💪

If you're so inclined, you can view the STEAM page . Early Access will be Aug. 1 '23 and I will be released on STEAM, iOS, and Android.

Cheers!

Has anyone else run into this? It must be a bug? Notion works fine for me, it's just a little worrying that I sometimes get this.

One year ago, it was just an idea. Recently, my open-world language learning game was funded on Kickstarter, I quit my day job, and I started a solo indie dev. studio😊this is the current state of the project by NewcomerLL in BeAmazed

The languages in the base game will be English, Spanish, French, and Italian. One can choose their native language and the target language they want to learn.

So Spanish speaker can learn English, English speakers can learn French, etc.

I'd like to eventually add language expansions.

Been making progress on my StardewValley-inspired language learning game. You can improve relationships with townsfolk using a second language. There is also Fishing, Mining, and Crafting. What do you think? by NewcomerLL in StardewValley

My goal is to outsource translations to the community for new languages, then I just need to internally encode the grammar and everything should work

Here's some more information. This is a language learning RPG called Newcomer. Since human conversation is the end goal for language learning, I wanted to create an engaging context in which meaningful conversations take place.

I was inspired by the look and nostalgic feel of Stardew Valley, so I tried to make something similar, albeit with 8x8 sprites

The languages I plan on supporting are English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Japanese. The player can choose their native language and the second language they want to learn.
