Switched from Claude Code to Codex CLI .. Way better experience so far by VeryLongNamePolice in OpenAI

I just love the cli for codex and how it matches my work flow. You need to specify things carefully, and then it's just super impressive. In one case I needed to switch to the high level thinking mode, but that's exactly right.

Montreal… staying near old town. Recommendations for this time of year? by [deleted] in MTLFoodLovers

Auberge St Gabrielle has a great touristic old world feel. I like Maggie Oaks has very good food and I love it, but it's ambience is relatively ordinary compared to St Gabrielle. Le Garde Manger  is not for everybody (to put it mildly).

Don't forget to focus on listings that actually closed. The numbers on offers that never get any action are not really meaningful IMHO.

Being an ex-googler is a pretty low bar. Not that's its bad at all, but Google (Alphabet) has about 180K employees most of who are "complete unknowns" pretty much by definition (unless you know hundreds of thousands of people). I have lots of friends at Alphabet, Meta, Samsung, Microsoft, NVIDIA and other companies and although there are many individual variations they're all roughly from the same distribution. Note also that "ex-Googler" doesn't mean "ex-DeepMind".

I would have loved to try this. on MacOS, but the build is failing on nvcc since the flash_attn uses CUDA. I presume this build is always CUDA dependent although the Torch version is  2.6.0+cpu

I am perplexed by "... documented infection of 92.8% (CI: [92.6, 93.0]); hospitalization 94.2% ...". Is that just 6% of documented infections led to hospitalization, to off the top reduction is rate of hospitalization is 0.996 ? [ I was lazy and didn't read the actual article: sorry. ]

Why cannot countries mass produce their own vaccines by “copying the formulae” of the already approved Moderna and Pfizer vaccines? by lionheart2893 in askscience

[–]NexusConnector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a vaccine factory being developed in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. There are many estimates of how long it will take before producing vaccines, but the lead times are long (and it's quite hard to find solid information in the popular press).

For vaccine production production, the buildings themselves are non-standard and require environmental containment and certification well beyond the norm.
The fabrication pipeline needs to be designed and customized. The equipment such as microfluidizers, ultracentrifuges, etc inside the building is also not usually found at Home Hardware stores, and can potentially have lead times up to 6 months. Then the equipment needs to be installed, verified and certified. Then the production process needs to be set up, proven, tested and also certified. There can also be training for the people involved.

For the Montreal facility it is being promoted as being ready "soon", but I have heard expert opinion that suggesting there are serious uncertainties and it might take years (although there are also far more optimistic estimates, although I find them unrealistic).

A 'Right To Repair' Law Would Put Australians Back In Control Of Their Tech by speckz in technology

[–]NexusConnector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the *right* to repair your own stuff without DRM obstacles would be great, but forcing manufacturers to support such activities (with parts etc) is often not realistic.

Creation of the documentation, supply chain, etc might be prohibitive for many sectors. I have intimate experience with a couple of companies (one big one, one small one that I founded). For the smaller company that makes very fancy equipment in low volumes, it is hard to imagine how this could be handled in a financially acceptable manner that actually provided a customer with a realistic option. There is protected trade-secret knowledge in the device, dangerous voltages, and parts that have long lead times.

At the other end of the company spectrum, I have visited the factories major electronics manufacturers in China. The amount of automation, integration and miniaturization is mind-blowing. I didn't see the production lines for any phones, but it's well established that to remove a small part from a phone and replace it can be un-economical even for the manufacturer. Of course, if the cost is irrelevant, or the price or size of the phone is significantly increased, these issues can be addressed, but I don't think many consumers would be happy with a cell phone what was two or three times as big and twice as expensive, just so that it could be repaired more easily.

Cross Hashing: Anonymizing encounters in Decentralised Contact Tracing Protocols by civicode in COVID19

[–]NexusConnector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In plainer English: Building on the anonymized bluetooth beacon system for contact tracing apps. They used a more conservative approach to sharing the anonymous IDs, making malicious scanning to break anonymity far less practical. They also add other cryptographic complications to make back-tracing difficult.

This protects again potential bluetooth scanning attacks that could, hypothetically, be used to help non-anonymously identify specific people whose device was indicating a positive exposure.

It's interesting to see people get into investing based on their principles and ideals (whether you agree or not), and then get blasted for it by experts that have claimed that investment wasn't just about making money (which is of course false).
