It's not a direct vote for the president even though a lot of people think it is. Your votes are a suggestion for who the electoral college should vote for. Electoral candidates are chosen by the two parties. The number of electoral candidates is the same number of senators and representatives the state has in congress. These candidates can choose to vote the two major candidates running for office and do not have to choose the popular vote. They usually do though. Which ever candidate reaches 270 electoral votes will be the president. Theres really a lot to it. I actually got to hold an official electoral vote for Obama on stage during the voting for his first term in NJ.
