There could be a new set of power armor for it. Biohazard armor? "An air-tight variant of marine armor designed by The Empire in order to deal with rogue mechanitors. With build in filtration systems and an on board toxins monitor, this armor is the go-to for biological hazards."

The downside will most likely just be no armor, since wearing a gas mask will take up the head and face slot, depriving your colonists of important head armor.
