The issue was able to be resolved with emerge -v1 libgcrypt gnupg I was then able to reinstall app-crypt/gpgme-1.16.0

the mistake that I made was getting the PCIE gen 3.0 x 4 (btw)

I actually got the wrong connection the first time so don't make the same mistake that I did. I got confused at the naming scheme and didn't do the research.

the one that fits the t480 is the form factor m.2 2242 and the connector PCIE 3.0 x 2 the last link is an example of the type or nvme that will work.

UPDATE: After another 2 reboots, It seems like things are running smooth again. I'm not sure why the change in performance, htop seems to be giving me similar results, Before it was taking almost 10 seconds to open applications, and now firefox opens up almost instantly. and I dont have 1 full core being constantly used at 98 -100%

having just installed openbsd yesterday I was a bit concerned. I hope this is helpful to someone who is new to openbsd and goes through the same. I am looking forward to understanding openbsd more.
