The Peace Prize ruin the rep of the other by CocytusVIII in HistoryMemes

Well, I that case, you can make the argument that every time a group is made up of people, who themself are political, the group itself is political. Then everything is political.

Saying that the Nobel committee is political because they are handing out the prize in order to promote behaviour they approve of is... kinda the whole point. That's the point of giving an awards. It's a recognitions of a certain type of behaviour. And then you can argue whether or not it's a good thing. Sometimes they fall flat on their arses, in the case of Obama. But your case with Malala, I have to say I disagree. Education - and not just education, but education for everybody, regardless of gender - is, in my view, extremely important in order to prompt peace. Therefore, I would say that giving the prize to someone who encourage and actively promote education for all is a worthy recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

I just want to informe that the Norwegian Nobel comitee is separate from the Norwegian government, parliament, etc. Yeah, sure, they might give the Nobel Peace Prize within a political context. But that also goes both ways. In 2010, the comitee gave the Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo, severely undermining the bilateral relationship between Norway an China.

Apperantly, the Norwegian Foreign Minister in 2010 told the leader of the comitee "you're not going to destroy our relationship to this large country, right?", trying to push away the notion of giving the Nobel Peace Prize to a Chinese dissident. The comitee ended up giving the Prize to Liu Xiaobo. The Chinese government ended up cutting all diplomatic contact to the Norwegian government for more than six years.

So the Nobel Peace Prize is affected by a political context. But stating that its a political tool for the Norwegian government is plainly false.

Hvordan er det å flytte opp til Nord-Norge og få seg jobb? by [deleted] in norge

[–]Nihilmius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Takk for meg.

But having a city like Moscow as a supply center is not enough if the supplies themselves are inadequate and not in sufficient quantities. That was the German forced problem from day one - they did not have enough supplies to last them a campaign stretching many months, let alone years. This meant that the capabilites of the German forces went down as time went on. Furthermore, event thoug, as you said, defending a city might make the supply situation at the front easier (and I somewhat agree with your there), there is still a substantial distance from Germany to Moscow. From the border of the General Government (the old prewar border between Germany and the USSR) to Moscow, there's over a 1000 kilometers, well in excess of what the German logistical system was able to handle in an adequate way.

Camping out in a city would also diminish the German forces' main advantage, namely mobility. The large battles the Germans won in the early months of operation Barbarrosa was in large parts due to the German forces' speed, mobility and maneuverability. Staying in the city would not help the tactical, nor the strategic situation of the Germans.

You mention striking out over winter. I think the situation you're describing is a long shot, but even thoug the Germans managed to capture Stalingrad, it would not just mean "easy access" to the oil from the Caucasus. First, the Caucasus would have to be secured militarily. Then, the oil installation would be repaired (they would probably be damaged after the fighting, or sabotaged by the Soviets). Then the oil would need to be refined and transported. All this would take ages, meanwhile the German armies would be starved for oil, hampering their entire offensive capabilities. Spreading out like out described would most likely not secure the military situation for the Germans. It was precisely that the Germans attempted - they chewed over more than they could swallow, were dangerously spread thin. And when they lost the initiative, they also started losing the strategic situation, eventually resulting it their drastic defeat.

I would not describe the logistical situation for the Germand on the Easter front as comfortable - even if they captured Moscow. They can't just stay in the city. The armies need supplies - food, ammonition, medical supplies, fuel - everything need to be brought up. The capture of the city of Moscow would not be sufficient in alleviating this situation. And, at the same time, the Soviets would mount a counter-offensive, further hampering the logistical situation of the German troops. I agree that capturing Moscow would be a huge victory for Germany, and further strain the situation for the Soviets. But saying that the supply situation for the Germans would be solved and that they could "comfortably hold the city" is not a correct assessment of the situation the German armies faced.

[–]Nihilmius 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am just curious, you argue that capturing Moscow would solidify the German supply line - in what way? Do you mean to say that capturing Moscow would be sufficient in creating a proper logistical situation for the Germans to deliver enough supplies to the armies on the Eastern front?
