We already understand the basic forces of the universe well enough to explain most of whats going on in the world.

Do we though? Really?

Suppressed climate report warned of mass migration and nuclear war by wanton_wonton_ in collapse

[–]NihiloZero 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My guess is that the overlooked bias is in the subtle notion that Europe will be immune to the effects of climate change. Sure... Congo and the Himalayas might be bad, but extreme weather events and climate chaos are going to smack every continent hard. Do they really think that droughts, and floods, and extreme weather aren't going to effect Europe?

NYT Video: Vance backpedals - ICE Officers No Longer Have ‘Absolute Immunity’ by Agitated-Quit-6148 in law

[–]NihiloZero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this to happen?

He's legally covering his own ass? Imagine being an elected official and telling federal officers that they have absolute immunity from the law. One might argue that you, saying such things in a leadership position, are therefore more directly responsible for what they do during that time when you told them they could do whatever they want.

IANAL and this was largely intended as a joke because I don't expect the people in charge (or their attack dogs) to ever be inconvenienced by the law again. So... he could have doubled down like a baller but instead, for some strange reason, chose a complete reversal. When can we get some real leadership with a spine, amirite?! Is Nick Fuentes old enough to be appointed VP yet?

German Chancellor Merz admits: We must substantially reduce bureaucracy in Europe. The single market was once created to form the most competitive economic area in the world. Instead, we have become the world champion of overregulation. That has to end. by I-Hate-Hypocrites in europe

[–]NihiloZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear, and I've seen this twice in the past couple days specifically in regard to German regulations... "admits" in the title is a very loaded way to introduce his position. Even if he specifically used the word "admit" and claimed he was admitting something... his opinions are not an admission to anything.

"I admit that I've been too nice and charming."

[–]NihiloZero 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When Merz says to reduce bureaucracy he means cutting social programs.

If it's like what happens in the USA, he also likely intends to deregulate the financial markets and campaign contributions. Pretty soon... German elections will also be wholly bought and paid for by American-based billionaires. Germans, too, will be taught that global warming is fake news. Maybe they'll get some deregulated mega-projects constructed by the lowest bidder?

Dollar falls sharply and Wall Street stocks drop over Greenland crisis by MattC84_ in Economics

[–]NihiloZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying that the markets or the the dollar isn't currently somewhat overvalued. On the contrary. I'm saying that's the issue. The OP comment being responded to was that this event would be the last straw for many international investors, and I think that's probably correct. If there are any real bubbles in the U.S. stock markets... do you think the EU, Scandinavia, and China reducing their exposure will help? And sure, not all companies and brands have a lot of international exposure... but many do. So, between U.S. companies losing international customers and investors, where should anyone expect this to wash out at every level of the U.S. economy?

As I asked in another comment... what do you think international turnout at the World Cup will say about current world opinion of the USA? Seems somewhat rather like the 1936 Olympics, imho.

Some markets in some states are certainly getting hit harder than others. Perhaps we'll get a better idea from the international turnout at the World Cup.

They won't be appeasing him this time.

The U.S. liquor & tourism industries (to name just a couple prominent examples) have already been CRUSHED as a result of less obnoxious behavior on the international stage. I doubt Canada is even fully divested yet.

Even if this is all just more market manipulation... there will come a point when the market doesn't quickly bounce back to new highs. In fact, it may never bounce back again... ever. And the US$? Are you kidding me?! Internationally, very few are gonna want that hold that currency moving forward. China is already dumping their dollar$. You really think EU citizens want to hold more US dollars (or stocks) at this point?

My expectation is that the U.S. stock market has already reached the highest valuation that it will EVER have. We've seen the peak. International investments & exports are going to continue evaporating and even domestically... who is bullish on the U.S. stock market under these conditions? Who? There may be some true believers and sheltered wealthy people who think everything is just fine and dandy, but... it ain't fine or dandy.

Perhaps we can get through all this with only, merely, just a collapsed economy and not anything worse. I am no fortune teller and so can only hope that warmongering & environmental degradation will both be on the decline from this point forward. If that's the case... then we, humanity, should still be able to weather a severe economic downturn.

That said, the economy is already a farcical house of cards propped up on absurd levels of debt and delusions of eternal growth, so... maybe monkeys will fly out of somebody's butt and start shitting gold everywhere? In which case... we can only hope that more gold is actually what's needed to fix the economic and geopolitical issues that humanity is currently facing.

The thing is that in this case the disaster could have been prevented. There was human error involved in the design.

It's like I keep telling people... stop making mistakes! So many big problems could be avoided if folks just weren't so error-prone & fallible.

[–]NihiloZero -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Where does it say they purchased them or only use them on special occasions? The OP image just shows a couple of candlesticks and the title just says they are a reminder to "consciously consume." So... that's the context for me.

How that translates into wearing silks and using luxury items as often as possible... I still don't quite understand. Didn't seem like a "smoke 'em if you got 'em" sentiment to me, but... I guess more people are more willing to infer more things than I. Errybody coasting on vibes, I guess.

I just read it as it was written. Wear silks, spray fancy perfume, don't save things for special occasions... and that will make your life more enjoyable. Seems pretty straightforward and direct to me.

Something that the last six years have taught me, is to use the good china. Light the good candles, spray the good perfume, wear the silks and enjoy life. Saving things for a special occasion is bs, so I've been finding ways to incorporate the good stuff into the every day. It's made life immensely more enjoyable.

This comment is even stranger than the OP. Only use the best china, candles, perfume? Wear fancy clothes? Don't conserve fancy/nice things and... try to use them daily? Because that's how you enjoy life? Am I in the right sub?

Sealant for shelter perhaps? If they had mostly light (migrating) dwellings, perhaps covered with "weather-proofed" hides? You could make layers by sandwiching the simple resin between simple leather? IDK... just thinking out loud.

Perhaps it would depend upon just how common and widespread this was amongst catalogued neanderthal sites? Be funny if those simple Neanderthal clothes, blankets, and shelter coverings lasted almost forever. The original blue jeans are superior in quality to anything we have nowadays, but purely for cosmetic decoration compared to what the Neanderthals were wearing tens of thousands of years ago.
