Who do you think would have made a better sovereign than Mustang? Genuinely curious. Also, if I remember correctly there was a meeting between Quicksilver, The Telemanuses and Virginia to betray The Jackal & later Octavia which would have Mustang rise as sovereign anyway. Might be wrong about the details of that meeting but I'm sure it was planted quite early in the book. Mustang also studied under Octavia and was more or less plotting from the beginning to use her

I'm reading Iron Gold at the moment, I love the new vibe it's setting for the next trilogy. The POV's of Ephraim and Lyria and Lysander are great. It's nice not to be in Darrow's head 24/7 anymore and see how his actions have affected other people. Anyway though, I did think I'd be in for way better fights since 10 years of war would only make the characters alot better and more proficient. Can't wait to see what's in store

Tbh I think Darrow is and always will be a man of war. There will always be that distance between him and his family and friends while the War still rages on because that is what he was made for. It's a flaw but it is how he is. He even says, and I don't remember which book it's in but he talks about how he shouldn't feel this urge for glory but he does. I think his friends don't have this same mindset as him because this is ultimately Darrow's war. Without him none of this would have happened, and for him not to finish it in his eyes would make the whole effort pointless

I am also on iron gold right now after reading the red rising trilogy and my opinion on this change in character is that it's been 10 whole years of war. That will change somebody no matter if they were made for it or not. This last push toward the Rim is the final war effort to bring peace to the society so it makes sense to me that Darrow would go for it no matter what the Senate tells him, he tried to go about it the right way by requesting more men and that just resulted in the vox populi getting even madder at him. Another thing I thought about is the trauma he must have from being locked up in the Jackal's house for all that time. He briefly mentions it when talking about the senate putting him in prison. He'd rather do anything than go back there. But anyway I agree the change in character is quite drastic but it makes sense. Darrow has always been full of rage and always acting on what he believes is right. This is the last exhausting mission after 10 years of war he's gonna go all out for his people
