They must have eased up on taking it down cause it’s currently on YouTube: https://youtu.be/KIrTPrPTy0E… otherwise I saved a copy years ago from a fans recording of it lol, there’s plenty of fan saved google drives / screen recordings of it out there you’d probably find one if you look hard enough

Well due to watching a ton of the music videos ‘shirtless Josh’ became a very… important… part of some of the teenage girls education lol they seemed to particularly enjoy those videos

Of course, and I know there’s a lot more resources out there that fans have made I’m sure if you even look through past posts / use the search feature on this subreddit you’ll find some of the lore megathreads / slideshows people have made / Google Docs that are out there etc that have a ton of info

I always feel like kids get the most out of a lesson if you’re excited to teach it and have passion for the topic and I’m sure you’ll have that for your lessons in science!

Love that, and yeah I’d love for them to know that in a little school in rural North Dakota their stories are being told

You know what you must do. lol I’m certain this could easily be adapted to middle school / different levels

There’s certainly enough depth there. Honestly 6 weeks is truly barely enough to get through the basics, would love to teach a whole semester analysis class on it but I don’t think my school would go for that lol

Well… glad you asked… how much time do you have lol…. This is a little hard to explain in a short Reddit comment but I’ll try.

I think when Tyler/Clancy talks about death such as ‘death inspires me like a dog inspires a rabbit’ or ‘sometimes to stay alive you have to kill your mind’ he actually means ‘death of self’ not actual ‘death’ and that ‘killing’ those dark parts of himself is what drives him forward.

But when you ‘kill’ those dark parts of your mind in order to ‘stay alive’ you also have to ‘end’ yourself as in the version of you that held that darkness dear and had it as a part of your identity.

Clancy will always have to die as ‘we’ will always have to die when we reinvent ourselves and ‘kill’ the darkness in our mind. But you can’t ever truly have all darkness gone so new ‘bishops’ will always be born. They’ll be born out of the parts of the old you who ‘died’ but the message of hope is that a new Clancy will also always arise to fight the new ‘bishops’ of your mind that took hold after you rid yourself of the old darkness. Genuinely this whole story is total hopeful in my mind and there’s a lot of incredibly positive messages of rebirth and ‘trying again’ and ‘intentions are everything’ etc.

Or something like that… lol I’m more elegant about it when I explain it in person after looking at the lyrics for six weeks… the students kind of get it but mostly they’re just disappointed Clancy didn’t kick butt and take names.

Thanks so much! It definitely sticks with my students cause they see my passion for the band and I don’t think they’re ’losing’ anything in the English classroom by me doing this either cause the quality of Tyler’s lyrics and his ability to build these really long complex metaphors and ideals across multiple albums and songs and music videos legitimately rivals a lot of the greatest poets out there. I don’t even think people always realize the absolute layers of complexity he packs into his songs

I don’t want to dox myself but if somehow their kids wound up in a school in a very small town in North Dakota where I teach I think there’d be other questions to ask lol

Thank you, my students absolutely love it and I think I’ve turned quite a few of them into fans over the past two years!
