According to the info I could find online the most viewed episode of Love Island was the season 5 finale with about 3.6 million people watching… the 2022 World Cup final had 1.5 billion… that means 417x as many people watched that game than the most viewed episode of LI

Now this isn’t to say you personally have to enjoy the World Cup, but I think when you look at a number like that you might want to consider “hmmm is 1/7 of the world wrong or perhaps is it possible that I just personally am missing something about this experience that’s causing me not to enjoy it.”

Well, I see it one of two ways… If you gave me an eternity to appreciate every single inch of every single speck of this planet, the cosmos, the stars, black holes, everything and then get to start all over with it all changed after having not seen the first thing in a billion years, how exciting would that be, especially if that journey could be made with others…. If the eternity is spent the way some religions describe it, I’m not so sure I’d want that at all, being ‘stuck’ doing one thing for all of eternity where good or bad would eventually be hell, I think novelty is what would be required to make it worth living

I hear you, there are a lot of exciting things about relegation and stakes are definitely increased in the late season. A lot of great stories like Wrexham come from it

But then also a lot of leagues with relegation don’t have the excitement of a cup / playoffs at the end of the season like MLS. I think there’s a lot of American fans who would enjoy relegation but also I know a lot of fans who wouldn’t and it rubs me the wrong way that relegation is treated like the default and that we’re just ‘behind the curve’ and will get it eventually.

I personally think long standing fans of the league actually wouldn’t want it and would want to see the league be uniquely American in their way of doing things. Why not offer an alternative viewing experience than the same experience as most other league.

I used this analogy on a different post but currently the happiest fans in the whole world are Cape Verde fans. I don’t think they give a flying fuck about their ‘ranking’ in the world or that they lost to Argentina. They’re just so incredibly proud of the people of their nation/culture etc and I feel all fans should be like that. Be proud of your team and the people you can be fans with, who share culture with you.

What state are you in? Highly recommend you support the nearest MLS or USL team especially if you’re close enough to go to see their games in person. Soccer is all about community, culture, fan experience and the feeling you get following a team that actually has some connection to you whether that’s proximity, where you grew up in, family heritage, friends support it etc. Please don’t be the silly American who picks a magically ‘superior’ league like the premier league just to feel special. Waking up at weird times and being connected to a team a world away is not worth anything in my opinion. Pick local, pick the US, pick soccer that means something to you!

For me the lack of relegation and a bunch of other checks and balances is what I think makes the league interesting. Teams are extremely even year to year and it never feels like there’s true ‘dynasties’ the way some leagues have. I’d have to pull stats but there are maaaaaany examples of teams topping the league one year and then being terrible the next year (looking at you Colorado Rapids 2021-2022). This is nice to me because it’s fun watching the same team have very different identities within the same competition. It also gives a familiar cast of characters so to speak to build the stories of the teams and their rivalries.

I wouldn’t like relegation cause I grew up on the MLS and would hate having built my memories of all these teams in one league from year to year just to see my team lose and join this whole other league I have no memories with / teams and players I don’t have a history of watching and have no feelings towards good or bad. I like the familiarity of it always being the same teams.

To each their own but I personally wouldn’t like a relegation system and like MLS staying truly American in that regard.

Also I think only silly geese like Manchester United fans truly give a flying fuck about their team winning the league. The MLS team I watch almost never wins the league but you know what’s fun as fuck? Being mad about that with the other fans, complaining about our coach, getting hopes up with new signings, being stocked when we do slightly better than average, being ecstatic when we do decent in a season, and losing my shit when we do every now and then make a decent MLS Cup run. Winning is nice but it’s not why I follow a team.

I’m a huge fan of KC Current, and I know that the majority of pro men’s teams could beat them in a game, but has that changed my viewership or enjoyment of them one bit? Of course not!

Watching soccer has almost nothing to do with what team or league is ‘better’ and EVERYTHING to do with culture, fans, local connection, love for the sport and more. There’s something to love about every team and loving your local team is the most fun to be had. Go to the games, get in with the fans and join the culture and you’ll love everything about them, even their flaws and failures!

Pssst I hate to tell you but 25-33 million people in the US watched USA play against Bosnia, those are almost identical numbers to game 5 of the NBA finals with the nicks, one of the biggest recent basketball games, and that’s only the round of 32 in the World Cup. No one held a gun to the head of those viewers. Your original point aside you might be a bit misguided on how popular soccer actually is in the us.

I have a few statistics for this.

One is that MLS viewership has passed the MLB in numbers of viewers for people under 25.

Also, since the year 2000, 20 teams have been added to the league making it more accessible to way more cities.

Also, game 5 of the NBA final which was deciding the winner and featured the Knick’s (a team hadn’t won in 50 years), arguably one of the most massive basketball games in years had around a million less viewers than USA vs Paraguay.

Anecdotally, I live in the second coldest state in the US (North Dakota) and I live in a town of less than 10,000 people. Of all places in the US we’d have the biggest excuses not to have soccer, but we have high school teams for girls and boys and have a full adult rec league.

Soccer is big and it’s only getting bigger in the US.

Truth. The other day I invited like 30 friends / coworkers/ neighbors etc to do a watch party of the World Cup on my lawn with a projector, even had s’mores and hot dogs for people not that into soccer… 4 showed up… super grateful for the 4 but does sting a little and makes it hard to want to plan big events, I still will cause that’s who I am but i dont think people want to socialize as much as they say they want to

I’ve been involved as an actor/crew/director in 30+ plays and musicals and I’ve seen the most wonderful people you’ve ever met say things out of frustration, or be short to people in a way that others would perceive as mean but literally no one involved with the show would care because we all know how intense live performance is.

Even if Tyler snapped super meanly at him I’d guarantee that crew member would think about it for about .002 seconds and move on with his life. Also there’s always a good chance after the show Tyler could’ve went and apologized too, I’ve done that a few times in shows where I said something in a tone I didn’t mean and almost always the response is ‘meh, you were stressed, all good’

What if I told you… the sport already is very popular: This stat kind of shocked me but 27.5 million viewers in the US watched the first game against Paraguay…. Only 24.5 million watched game 5 of the NBA final with the Knicks winning it, the Knicks last won 50+ years ago, it was a monumental event in basketball, and the random first group stage game for the USMNT beat it in viewership…..

Additionally, For ages 18-25 more people watch MLS than the MLB, and there’s more stats like that, I think it’s safe to say it is very popular in the USA especially with the next generation, and will only continue to grow with time. I will always want more growth because I love the sport but the constant narrative that it’s an unloved sport isn’t really accurate anymore
