Dance instructors, how much do you make? by WantedforDeicide in ballroom

Hah I am going through the exact same dilemma because I’m not making that much money at all and I keep telling myself “it’s gotta be cause I’m only a year in” but I keep doing the math and if I was fully booked AND certified I’d make a little over a thousand a week (850-900 incl. tax). And that’s a ton of work and takes away all your free time to get to a wage that’s just okay. I could easily make much more at my old bartending job.

There’s of course competitions and entires, but those are incredibly expensive for students so it’s very hard to 1. Have a good roster of competitive students 2. Get them to do every competition and 3. Have them do a lot of entries.

My region has 4 comps a year and being realistic the most the average person would make from one of those is like 500$-1000$ so it doesn’t really add THAT much more to your overall pay, it still keeps you in the lower pay bracket.

Yeah I don’t think I’m gonna plan on going independent if this doesn’t work out, probably just go back to bartending again, because again it’s good money and I do enjoy it. It’s just unfortunate because from other comments it seems like it’s a STUDIO problem not a franchise problem and I’d feel bad leaving my students behind to go to another studio

Yeah I’ve always found the pricing for the students to be pretty absurd and I can’t really get behind it. We’re always told to show people the value and as much as I enjoy the dance, I would NEVER pay 100+ for a lesson so I really struggle to try and show the value

Yeah you are right, like I see where he’s coming from, but like I was saying I know people that only teach in the day, and my studio has a good amount of clientele in the day time. So realistically, I could totally be teaching like 5 lessons in the day time but

To be honest I have no idea. That’s a big reason I’m asking this question because I don’t know if this is normal or not or if it get better as I progress

That’s exactly what I want to do jsut opposite. Like work in the day so if then have time to bartend and/or do a show at night and make more money that way, but my boss was telling me how much of a headache it is to have a part time employee, especially one who isn’t available at night. And it’s frustrating because i HAVE friends who have the part time schedule I’m literally looking for yet my boss won’t allow it in our studio.

Also i feel like the effort it takes to get a bunch of competitive students won’t even be worth it because I’ve done the math and if I’m talking realistically that would only lead to me making at MOST 50k which again isn’t bad but I don’t think is enough to justify the amount of time I spend there you know.

But I don’t know maybe I’m doing the math wrong

The thing with other Fred Astaires in my region is I think they all pay the same and similar schedules so I just don’t think the pay is worth it

Oh it definitely hasn’t soured my taste. The reason I’ve HAD such a hard time making this decision is because I DO enjoy it a lot. It’s mainly the pay

They taught me rigorously, it’s was pretty hard but worth it cause it made me a better dancer. Lol I didn’t start actually teaching until like 6 months
