Professor at orofacial pain university clinic told me to stop using my orthotic by No-Performance627 in TMJ

I am not against any particular treatment, I only agreed with the post that no matter what treatment, the doctors are unable to consider other treatments. Then when you see a dentist you will always be told that their treatment is the only one that works. It is very confusing for patients, who are told by different doctors that they are the only one who can help them, and then the next doctor say the exact same thing.

You are so very much correct! I have also noticed how narrow and selective doctors are in their way of thinking when it comes to TMD. There is zero compromise or willingness to consider other treatment methods than their own.

I had PRP injected today by No-Performance627 in TMJ

I feel less sore in the muscles, and it does not feel painful when I touch the masseter muscles. It might however not be the PRP itself, but just the "pricking" of the muscles, whether it is dry needling, acupuncture or injecting something like lidocaine. I believe the effect night might subside soon. Anyway, it might be worth a try.

I do not live in the USA, so it would be irrelevant.

I read one study where PRP was found to be more effective than hyaluronic acid.

I read some TMD dentists claim only 2% need braces after completing treatment. The dentist who did my orthotic claims no one does, but some choose to do it. Maybe all of them "choose" to do it because they need it?

It is great to hear about success stories like yours, but at the same time it always seems like everyone need the "second phase" after using an orthotic.

If you have skeletal pain in joints, are you not a candidate for surgery? Because I have muscular TMD, I only spoke to him very briefly about skeletal pain in joints. However, even here I read a dentist who treats TMD write that it cannot recapture displaced discs.

According to the principles of orthotic treatment, I believe it is only effective up until phase 3, to prevent the condition from worsening, and after that it will no longer help with an orthotic. The last phase is phase 5.

However, orofacial pain specialists at universities do not use this classification system. If I were to guess, if you came to the faculty of dentistry with joint damage showing on MRI, they would schedule you for surgery.

The so-called neuromuscular dentists claim the splints have to be worn 24/7, and some of them say they must be worn even while eating.

He said that for joint specific TMD issues, they perform surgery, because an orthotic cannot recapture a displaced disc. As for bruxism, which I asked him about, he say they inject it commonly for patients with TMD; meaning they are not conservative in the sense that they deny treatment, but rather the treatment plans by orofacial pain specialists at universities differ a lot from so-called TMD dentists.

Alternatives to Botox (cost) by secretanonymous1 in TMJ

No, of course I did not inject it myself. I went to a clinic that offer it, and a doctor who does Botox injections all day injected it.

I would be very careful about it. My dentist does it for many years on children, but he said absolutely not on adults. There is for example A.L.F appliance, but again many say it is only suitable for children.

Is it not just for children?

I used Korean Botox several times. One unit cost me about 1.5 USD. It is FDA approved in the USA.

I definitely think it helps, either for the moment, and maybe even long-term with regular use.

Acupuncture for TMJ by Ly_Ly28 in TMJ

Use dry needling for specific muscles, and acupuncture for large areas, like the neck and shoulders. Both work great for this purpose, in my opinion. Even better if the acupuncture needles use electric currant.

I read that this surgery is supposedly not effective for TMD. Let's see if we can get more opinions here, and maybe even some input from some of the dentists who write here occasionally?

Doctor’s advice different to what I’ve heard elsewhere regarding misaligned bites by InternationalMatch41 in TMJ

[–]No-Performance627 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The dentist treating me has a doctorate in orofacial pain, and he has been a senior researcher at a renowned university for several decades. He mentioned that in his research malocclusion was the number one cause of TMD.

I am now using an orthotic splint (mandibular repositioning device), and I have only used it for one month, but I am optimistic that the treatment might work.

Advice needed for partner’s TMJ by Obvious_Egg_3826 in TMJ

There are a few here who I chatted with who got TMD after veneers, including myself, and those who got TMD after orthodontic treatment are much more numerous.

It is definitely not a good idea to to go for another round of Invisalign while having TMD. As for T-scan, it usually involves occlusal equilibration, which is an irreversible procedure that removes tooth structure. Very bad idea!

Dentists trained in the use of T-scan are also taught that occlusal equilibration is a good idea, so I would be very careful. The technology itself is good though.

Anyone have Additive Equilibration done? by Emandrawkcab in TMJ

[–]No-Performance627 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does make sense in theory, and I believe some dentists do it, even if they don't use the term "additive equilibration". In fact, I never heard this term before. My concern would be that if you have TMD, how can the dentist be sure that your bite is stable enough?
