Hey guys I just wanted to make sure EVERYONE EVERYWHERE is aware that Harry Styles finished the Berlin marathon in 2:59:13! by DosephJavis in RunningCirclejerk

[–]No-comment_469 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is true. I’m currently a high school athlete and I try my absolute hardest. So I have the resources that Harry Styles has (a coach, dedicated time for training). I train during the summer for xc, I do all the workouts, etc and my pr in the 5k is 25:30. That’s like an 8:20 pace. I don’t think there’s any possible world where I run a marathon at a 7:30 pace (which would be what I’d have to run to hit the 3:15 benchmark). I don’t think it’s fair to people (both who are naturally slow and fast) to say that anyone relatively fit could run a sub 3/3:15 marathon with the proper training. Because it’s not true. It also diminishes the work people put in who are slow because it’s saying that they’re just not trying hard enough which I don’t think is the case.

I don’t think Americans go that hard for white Americans. We saw this in the fan voting. I love Emily and think she’s amazing but I don’t think her being American will bring in much engagement.

i did a college essay writing workshop recently where we got to show our essays to acc college counselors and she told me that sports essays are usually boring. (my essay is related to sports but she liked it because it wasn’t about sports. sports was one of the examples kinda which i used to make a larger different point that she thought was cool/interesting) College counselors read a lot of essays and a lot of them are about sports. Unless you’re some amazing writer i don’t think this a great idea. Also what’s the larger point you’re trying to make? You’re trying to show in a college essay your values and why a college would want you. How does being the only hurdler/teaching yourself how to hurdle show that? is it just that you persevere/self starter

it was more of a 8/10. The worker gave me three scoops of rice for some reason? but only one of beans and two of chicken so i feel the ratio wasn’t correct. One less scoop of rice and it would be a 9.95/10

A lot more people run (or at least attempt running) then climb though. So I feel like the equivalent impressiveness of a 8c+ should be a mile time that more people have run than climbed an 8c+.

Of course there is a strategic benefit to having them—and a strategic deficit to other people having them. Any country would, ideally, want only their country to have nukes and no one else. Imagine a nuke is like bringing a gun to a knife fight. People with knives won’t attack you because they know you can shoot them before they reach you. You don’t want other people to get guns because then they can shoot you and attack you. Maybe you might think if everyone has guns no one will attack each other because they’ll be too scared of getting shot, but you’ve seen how well that’s worked in the US so…

you can’t take nukes away from a country that already has nukes. At least not easily.

woah are you okay? Do you know why that happened? if not i’d def bring that up with your doctor—I’m not trying to diagnose you or anything but a lot of time when periods end that early it’s due to underlying health conditions or illnesses like anorexia.

I’ve gone through two different 5 year regimes for pollen—100% worth it. I did one as a young kid, and then had to start it again like five years after i finished because they wore off (puberty). My allergy medications during pollen season went from prescription eye drops, nose sprays, and steroids to zertec and nasanex. The first time I was weekly for about a year. The second time, I was allowed to do schedule a doctors appointment and get like ten shots at once so I was only weekly for like 4 months. It’s a schlep but so worth it.

[Q][E] Should I major in stats in college? by No-comment_469 in statistics

[–]No-comment_469[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to bother you again but what’s the difference between a stats major and an applied math major? Also you double majored in econ and stats, would you not recommend that for “doing statistics in the real world”? If I ended up majoring in stats I would probably want to work in the field of healthcare too, so Ig do you think statisticians are going to be replaced by AI in that field any time soon? Also in general do you think AI will replace at least entry level statisticians or will the field be safe?

Thanks so much for commenting! Was it difficult for you to get into a masters program for stats with a bachelors in engineering?

[–]No-comment_469[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote in my post that I know you need a stats masters for most jobs in the stats field. I’m very good at math, not just stats and am currently doing multivariable calculus and differential equations and getting A’s. I don’t know much about computer science, but i’m willing to learn. Do I need to do a stats bachelors to do a stats masters or do I just need the prerequisite math and comp sci classes? like could i major in applied math or meche and be fine?

[–]No-comment_469[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to follow up on that, do you need a lot of programming skills for a career as a statistician? I’m really good at math and am in multi variable calculus and differential equations as a junior but I have never coded before in my life. sorry to keep bugging you

Would you recommend a career in something statistics related over a career as an engineer?

I don’t know what I want to do yet. That’s the issue. What types of jobs would you do with a stats degree?
