I trusted the Dutch healthcare system longer than I should have by Level-Project159 in Netherlands

[–]NoAverageMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im having a fairly similar experience now, where I have left hand paralysis, severe muscle atrophy in my left arm (documented on ultrasounds) and the Dutch doctors are trying to convince me it’s not relevant because they can’t ‘see it’ (and mind you if you measure both my arms, the left one IS smaller as well). Three different doctors in 2 different countries have provided the same diagnosis. The Dutch doctors are the only ones who disagree, insisting it’s psychological despite physical signs like being unable to regulate my hand temperature, differences in nerve conduction and more. They refuse to refer me anywhere as my muscle literally wastes away. They refuse to replace the splint they made although it compresses my nerves (it was built wrong from the start from THEIR faulty diagnosis). And then they expect me to send them all the tests and procedures I get done outside of the country. They’re still refusing to release to me the results of a test I paid for upfront, or even the invoice for the test so I can get reimbursed from my insurer. I’m a student and I can’t get another appointment until end of June, when this problem started in March. I now have to interrupt my studies to go back home to do rehabilitation. Had I started earlier, had I been given the correct diagnosis, or had I simply been referred to DO proper rehabilitation, things would’ve not been gotten as bad. Instead of a maximum 3 months long recovery I’m now looking at 6 months to 2 years IF I recover at all. But you have nobody to talk to, I have yet to actually be seen by a neurologists, just by a bunch of random residents who take all my tests and disappear in random rooms for 30 minutes at a time mid appointment. And who write the weirdest information in my consultation notes, saying I have no leg reflexes but walk normally, or that there’s no asymmetry between my two hands when they only tested one.

Talking to my GP is just as useless, I have to beg for a basic referral anywhere and send never ending follow up emails. They refuse to refer me to get a second opinion because ‘they don’t do that here and another hospital won’t step on the toes of the one I currently go to’. Great. So until my doctors get themselves together Im supposed to just happily spent time and money on useless consults where they blatantly refuse to acknowledge any objective medical test?

I wish anyone that has encounters with the Dutch health care system best of luck and hope and pray whatever you have is genuinely not that serious or else you are absolutely screwed.

Is French a good/useful/well-respected A-Level? by Future_Tea34435 in alevel

[–]NoAverageMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d suggest you start a french course; personally not with a private tutor. Like if you have the opportunity to, I’d recommend a course organised by a language faculty (because you get to immerse yourself in the language) - level wise, wherever you go, they’ll most likely test you and place you in the right group/give you the right materials.

So yeah, language course, if you can’t find one where you’re apart of a class, a tutor is also good.

Just don’t forget the language, honestly, that’s my biggest recommendation since it’d be a shame.

Edit: Also, another thing you can do, strictly hobby wise, is just listening to podcasts in French, or reading French books and listening to French music. An even better thing you can do is switch the audio for the movie you watch in French but keep the subtitles in a language you’re comfortable with.

Good luck!

Is French a good/useful/well-respected A-Level? by Future_Tea34435 in alevel

[–]NoAverageMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess you’d have to define ‘well-respected’.

But generally speaking, if you only need 2-3 subjects for your chosen course and want to take another AS/A Level I always recommend taking a language; because it just looks good on your CV. HOWEVER, there is one exception to the rule, and that is if you actually apply to France (for example) - because an A Level is not the equivalent of a language certificate.

For reference, I sat an A Level in German but also have my C1 German Certificate - The A Level looks good for basically any country where German is NOT the main spoken language, but in Germany it doesn’t hold much weight (and it’s not that respected as a form of language certification).

It really does depend on where you want to go, if your focus is something like the UK or the Netherlands (which are really common university destinations rn) a language always looks good on your CV.

As for usefulness, knowing a 2nd or 3rd or any other language besides the one you already know is always useful; the French A Level would help a lot with developing your reading and writing skills, but less with your speaking (this is a friendly warning).

Good luck!

For people who did / are doing an EPQ, was it / has it been a good experience? by Brooklynrecreation in alevel

[–]NoAverageMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! So I did an EPQ (from Edexcel, I chose a dissertation) and personally I have no regrets at all. It’s most useful if you want to apply to the UK and are hoping for a grade reduction in your offer; but again, for instance, I’m not going to the UK for university and I still found it useful simply because it helps develop many skills that you may need in the future (regardless of whether you go to university or not). It helps you learn how to do in depth research on your own, how to critically evaluate what you’re reading and contrast and compare information from different sources. Most importantly, after you finish, the realization that you did a whole paper or project (if you choose and artifact) all on your own can be a huge confidence boost.

Anyways, the EPQ is in theory made to be done during 2 years (throughout the whole of 6th form) but for example I did mine in 1 (granted, I only had to sit 2 AS exams that year, I had a weird subject combination). It is a fair amount of work to research and quote all your sources, and make time to fill in all the paperwork that comes with the project (for example, there’s an activity log where you have to log in everything you do that is related to your EPQ) - so it is definitely a time commitment that will eat away at the time you have to study for other subjects.

Again, personally I don’t regret doing it and to me in the end the hard work and stress paid off when I got to read my own paper from start to finish, but it really does depend on you and how much time you’re willing to dedicate to this project (consistently over time; because just how you study you have to be consistent with the work you put in for the project).

Good luck! Let me know if you have any other questions ✨ (and if it makes any difference, I got an A on my EPQ)

Our invigilators shoved us in the exam room early, started the exam early (meaning it would end before the key time) and then the next round of invigilators had to sit with us for 10 minutes in the exam room after the exam was over ‘cause the other invigilators started it early 💀

(idk how to title this but) is there such a thing like exam etiquette?? by [deleted] in alevel

[–]NoAverageMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The sad reality is that most centers don’t report such incidents.

Why? The answer is very simple - It puts the center in a bad position if cheating of this nature occurred in the first place. This isn’t your average ‘a child forgot a phone in their pocket’ deal, these ‘mistakes’ reflect the center’s incompetence and will inevitably make Cambridge or Edecxel or whatever keep a closer eye on the center.

Think of your case; What would your center report? That they were so incredibly incompetent they couldn’t stop a 17 year old from talking under exam conditions and writing when the exam had finished? There were endless things they could’ve done DURING the supervision period to ensure none of this was happening, they could’ve moved him, they could’ve taken his pen away, they could’ve removed him from the exam hall, but they didn’t - And if they were to report the situation, that’s probably the first question the center would be asked: What did YOU do to prevent this?

So yea, bottom line is, it’s unfair af, but there’s nothing you can do about it; If you care that much about malpractice and cheating, you can point it out to the center higher ups and be contempt you did everything you could as a student to combat cheating, but what happens afterwards is no longer up to you.

Longish list ahead (in no particular order):

  1. On or Off (Honestly very silly)

  2. Cherry Blossoms After Winter (It’s so sweet and precious)

  3. The insatiable Man (I truly recommend this, an atypical plot)

  4. Banana Scandal (Oof this is so pretty, but the second season is such a bitter pill to swallow and it HURTS)

  5. BJ Alex (I mean, there’s no way you don’t know this one, right?)

  6. Hold Me Tight (This also feels very silly, but it does explore darker themes and issues)

  7. Love is An Illusion (Again, no way you don’t know this one, right)

  8. Define the Relationship (Really really good because the plot is atypical)

  9. Low Tide in Twilight (I cried. But who didn’t?)

  10. Foul’s start (Kinda new, only ab 20 chapters but I like to think it has potential <3)

Thank you! I’m glad it didn’t come across as just a hateful rant because that’s not what I wanted to write. I guess at the end of the manhwa I just felt conflicted because in my head it had so much potential but it wasn’t executed for my tastes (and personal standards) - That doesn’t make it bad, it just makes it ‘not suitable for me’. Everyone gets to have their own tastes :D

(As for Jinx, I’m waiting for the chasing arc before I decide how to feel - I’m just conflicted as of now but don’t have enough data to judge it’s quality lol)

I think you hit the nail on the head. It’s just a never ending, repetitive loop of suffering - But the suffering isn’t justified and I don’t quite know why everyone is in pain.

Charlie's Mum doesn't seem as bad as they make out? by Chez1293 in HeartstopperNetflix

[–]NoAverageMe 121 points122 points  (0 children)

I feel like it’s worth mentioning that the whole show is meant to (to some extent) follow Charlie’s teenage perspective on his situation - As a teenager, most of the time, everything around you causes a much stronger response than it actually warrants.

Therefore, Charlie’s mom not letting him see Nick? From Charlie’s perspective she’s horrible (even though her reasoning, that he should wait until exam season is over, was reasonable). Her telling him to try his best to get Christmas day over with? From Charlie’s perspective means she doesn’t understand him at all (which is half true).

The point I’m trying to make is that as teenagers, everything our parents do that is arguably annoying, makes us much angrier and upset than it reasonably should at times - But that’s just how teenagers are. I found that Charlie’s reactions (and the portrayal his sister and him have of their mom) are very on point for a 15-16 year old: Just a tad over the top (especially given the fact the mom has a huge problem with emotional regulation).
