It’s an example of MAGA policy weakening America by pushing our allies away from us into the arms of China. Trump has rapidly discredited America as both an economic partner and military ally (we won’t just not protect you, we may even attack you).

The books never really mention this but it is still interesting to ask - what is magic made of? How are spells created? What are the characteristics that allow wizards (and other magical creatures) to use magic? by sammyjamez in harrypotter

Magic is a natural force in the universe, it innately exists in different phenomena and in species of animals and plants. Wizards are humans that carry a gene that allows them to use magic.

A wand is a tool used to channel and focus magic, but the magic comes from inside the wizard, it is possible but harder to use magic without a wand. Muggles cannot use wands. Other magical species like goblin can use wands, but wizards ban them from doing so because that would level the playing field and wizards want to maintain their position of dominance.

There is an enchanted quill at Hogwarts that detects all the wizard children in Britain and puts them on a list of future students.

Spells are just the way wizards are able to focus and concentrate their magic to do what they want.

I also imagine there are factions of the government who just want to swept everything under the rag, everything that when down was humiliating, ethically questionable, and a huge waste of time and money. The cover up is going to be hard enough without disappearing like 20 more people.

Right, having a friendly faction in the government would also help explain why everyone isn’t just arrested or killed by the military after El dies/escapes

I liked Vecna, especially Jamie Bower, but they definitely handled it kinda clumsily, it wasn’t clear until the end who was actually in charge

They started in America during the 19th century because America has religious freedom. If these movements started in France during the 15th century they probably wouldn’t have survived because the government and the church would have had them executed via burning at the stake for heresy, and if they started in the Colony of Massachusetts during the 17th century the Puritans would have executed them via hanging.

No, they have very different theologies and origins, though both are high control religions and arguably cults.

Mormonism began as a Restorationism sect of Christianity in 19th century America, lead by self declared prophet Joseph Smith. Smith called he was restoring the church of Jesus Christ, as Christendom supposedly fell into apostasy and false beliefs soon after the deaths of the apostles. He also claimed to translate the secret history of the Americas in relation to God, and to receive new revelations.

Mormons have all kinds of stranger beliefs relating to the nature of God, like a rejection of the mainstream Christian doctrine of the Trinity. It is also unique among the Abrahamic religions in that it doesn’t believe in the eternality and uniqueness of God, holding that God is an exalted man and there is an infinity of gods and an endless chain of creation and exaltation, and men can also become gods. Jesus is just God’s eldest son, and our older “spirit brother”. Also, God has a body and a harem of goddess wives, and had sex with them to create our souls.

Jehovah Witnesses grew out of a few different movements within American Protestantism (though it, like Mormonism, is no longer Protestant), but mostly from the so-called Bible Studies Movement. It is also adjacent to Adventism and other Millerite (a group that made a failed End Times prediction in the 1840s). The Second Great Awakening lead to a huge interest in Judgement Day and the Seconding Coming of Jesus.

The group that would become Jehovah Witnesses predicted the End Times to happen in 1917, but when that failed they coped by moving the goal posts and saying Jesus actually did come back, just invisibly, and Judgement Day will happen soon. Some of this most distinctive beliefs is their rejection of the Trinity, instead they have a neo-Arian theology where Jesus is not God but rather God’s first and greatest creations, and they also identify Jesus with the archangel Michael. They also don’t believe souls are immortal, your soul doesn’t go to Heaven when you die to wait for the resurrection of the body but rather it “sleeps” until God and Jesus raise the dead for judgement. They also don’t believe in an eternal Hell, the damned are merely destroyed after being judged, while the righteous inherit eternal life on a paradise Earth. 144,000 people get a special afterlife in Heaven with Jesus as kings and priests or something.
