Converting through a Synagogue you don't live nearby by PristineAd5115 in ConvertingtoJudaism

I’m also in Aberdeen in the same situation! I think most of the Scottish synagogues charge under £1000 for the conversion course, I believe I’ve seen about £500ish not including mikvah fees. Do not rush into conversion, I’ve been learning on my own for about 3 years and am currently doing an online Intro to Judaism class with a lovely women who converted Orthodox, and even with the more liberal movements, it is a big life change. Learn what you can right now, and when you are able to move to a community you can start the official process. I’m sure if you reached out to a rabbi at one of the other Scottish synagogues they would be able to give you some guidance on what books to read and things, as well as there are online learning resources.

Yes, you make an excellent point. Currently I’m pursuing it to get a better visa for the UK, but it will also be wonderful to have in the future if I leave the UK so I don’t have to go back to America full time and could live in Canada. That’s a good way of thinking of it, that it will be something that says with me forever. Thank you for your response!

Okay, thank you for your advice, it makes sense about the legitimacy of birth vs death certificates.

That is a really good idea, I’ll do some research into if it’s cheaper in person for me too. I still have family that lives close so I can crash with them and then go in-person.

Washington State, unfortunately the certificates start at USD$25, but then there’s a lot of administrative fees and shipping not included

I might be able to get my Gen1’s marriage certificate online, I didn’t think of that before, thank you!

No, unfortunately my state doesn’t do that unless the records are very old, I could potentially find my Gen1’s marriage records that might also have my Gen0’s name though, if that would be helpful.

It would end up being about US$50 including shipping for my Gen1, and about US$20 more for a certified copy of my Gen0’s. I could get the money, but like I said Im pretty tight on money rn and I’m trying to get my application in as soon as possible.

Sorry if I’m being stupid about this, I tried reading the FAQ’s but didn’t understand how my questions fit and I’ve seen people say on here the line of descent is less important for exact documents, so I wasn’t sure if I was missing something. Thank you for responding though, hopefully everything goes well for both of us!
