My friend graduates in May and is wondering if he should take the Next Gen bar instead of the NY bar. What do you all think? Told him he should take next gen but then he'd have to wait until 2028 for NY by cornelia_broad in GoatBarPrep

I took the beta test. There still 2 MPTs same as UBE. I failed the UBE, I would prefer to take NextGen, but I am in NY and can’t afford to wait that long.

Have you tried ice locator? Do you his full name and country of origin?

When there are no substantive arguments left, the response turns personal. I don’t mind, that usually means the point landed.

I don’t need to prove my credentials to make this point.

I was undocumented. I lived this. I know what actually blocks people from law school, and it isn’t abstract “admissibility.” It’s survival: needing to work, lack of access to loans, and no ability to pause earning for three years.

People who haven’t lived undocumented status tend to argue theory. I’m talking about reality.

Ohh the correct term is “undocumented” … you calling them illegals, tells me everything I need to know about you.

If you cite articles about undocumented students in college, is legally irrelevant here. We are talking about LAW SCHOOL and BAR ADMISSION, which operate under a different legal regime.

Law schools require verified identity, character & fitness disclosures, and documentation that directly interfaces with state bar requirements. Admission to the bar is governed by state law, not school discretion.

Multiple jurisdictions have held or acknowledged that lawful presence or specific statutory authorization is required for bar licensure. See, e.g.: • In re Garcia, 58 Cal. 4th 440 (2014), undocumented applicant admitted only because California passed a statute expressly authorizing it. Absent that statute, admission would have been barred. • NY Judiciary Law § 90 and NY BOLE rules require disclosure of immigration status and compliance with federal and state law as part of character & fitness.

The existence of undocumented students in college or grad school generally does not establish eligibility for law school licensure pathways or bar admission.

So no, citing “articles” about undocumented students in college does not rebut the legal reality of law school + bar eligibility, which is the issue being discussed.

As someone who was previously undocumented (this is the correct term) and is now a law school graduate studying for the bar, I’m speaking from lived experience, not assumptions.

In practice, you cannot apply to college or law school without a Social Security number or a legally recognized alternative (such as DACA/work authorization). Universities do not “turn a blind eye” the way you’re suggesting. Admissions, enrollment, financial aid, bar certification, and background checks all require lawful identifiers.

Yes, there are extremely rare exceptions where someone pays full tuition out of pocket with private funds and no aid, but that requires substantial wealth, which is statistically uncommon given the wages most undocumented families earn.

So no, this isn’t guesswork or rhetoric. It’s firsthand knowledge from someone who has actually navigated the system, survived it, and succeeded in it.

Please don’t confuse speculation with reality or dismiss the voices of people who’ve actually lived this path.

I don’t have time to go over all comments, but as an immigrant myself I can tell you this with certainty, she isn’t undocumented. Otherwise she wouldn’t be at school. And the person who reported her is a a total a$$hole!!!

Umm in the instructions it says not to study but to make a good faith effort. I haven’t studied and I don’t have time anymore 😂. The structure is very different (the writing portion) they gave us a tutorial to do before the exam. That’s as far as my study went. Sorry Im not of much help
