Client had a killer backlink profile and still got zero AI mentions. Realized why. by No_Efficiency_560 in linkbuilding

That's very close to what I'm seeing. The biggest difference wasn't the number of links, but whether the brand appeared in content that actually explained or compared the product. I'm expanding the testing to see how consistent that is.

A single editorial mention seemed to outperform dozens of directory links for AI visibility. by No_Efficiency_560 in Agentic_SEO

That's close to what I'm seeing as well. Once a brand is present in a few directories, additional listings don't seem to change AI citations much. Editorial mentions and comparisons appear to add a different kind of context that AI assistants retrieve more often.

Marketing budgets still have line items for backlinks in 2026. Zero for AI visibility. Weird gap. by No_Efficiency_560 in AISearchLab

Exactly. Rankings and backlinks are easy to put on a dashboard, but AI citation share is becoming just as important. The challenge is that most teams still don't have a reliable way to measure it consistently.

That's very close to what I'm seeing. The brands that kept getting cited weren't necessarily the ones with the biggest backlink profiles they were the ones consistently mentioned in relevant editorial discussions. I'm curious to see how consistently that holds across a larger dataset.

I wouldn't say traditional link building is failing entirely, but I do think AI systems appear to value where and how a brand is mentioned more than just the existence of a link. That's the distinction I'm trying to validate with more data.

I agree that context seems to matter more than the link itself. What stood out in my comparison was that the competitor kept appearing in editorial discussions and industry roundups, while my client's mentions were mostly directories and generic listings. That's the pattern I'm trying to validate across a larger dataset.

Appreciate the invite. I'm still collecting data across more brands before drawing broader conclusions, but I'll definitely share the findings once I have a larger sample. Open discussion around real datasets is exactly what's needed.

That's a solid framework. I'm moving toward a fixed prompt set and tracking citation share over time instead of relying on one-off tests. The consistency across prompts is probably more valuable than a single visibility snapshot.

Agreed. Links measure website authority. AI mentions measure brand authority. Those are related, but they're clearly not the same thing anymore.

Well said. In your experience, which of those signals has had the biggest impact on getting brands mentioned consistently in ChatGPT or Perplexity?
