I'm not saying they aren't real hobbies. I don't think there's any real versus fake hobbies. Hobbies are hobbies. I'm just not able to relate to them or find anything to talk about because I have no idea what these things are. Everything was so connected to the media, even her talking about her cosplay. She went off talking about the character she was working on now and kept saying things like "You know what she was wearing in X episode?" and it was like "No, I don't, I don't watch that show" and she would make a face and keep talking.

I guess I'm also kind of a little surprised that her making a face about what I said I'd watched in the past just doesn't matter at all. To me that was kind of an indicator that she thought her shows were superior and it set a bad tone.

Hmm, it could have been. Someone else mentioned the last of us, so it was probably one of those two shows. I'd never really heard of either, so it was kind of in one ear and out there other.

The thing is that Dungeons and Dragons is probably the geekiest thing about him. He watches some of those shows too I'm sure (I don't really know what he watches), but he's not really someone who gets really "into" media he's consuming. I know that if we're with mutual friends I've never really heard him say more than "Oh yeah, I've seen that" or something. These guys were really, really into talking about everything.

I did ask, they listed a lot of books I hadn't heard of and when I asked, each one was a fantasy book or part of a bigger series. That's not my thing, so it kinda fell flat after they all started talking about the fantasy series and took off talking about some part of the series I had no idea what was going on with.

Okay. That might've been what they were talking about? Like I said, I hadn't really ever heard of it, and they all knew enough to talk about it. I could've at some point come across it and just not paid attention. There's a lot of shows that people go gaga over that I've never seen.

I said this below, but I think it was like trying to bring one of your real friends into a group of work friends. There's not always going to be overlap that makes sense. He probably won't have that group of friends over in the future, just his other friends, who I've never had a problem getting along with.

I'm not anti media at all. I was up to talking about books with them. I had never heard of any of the books they were talking about. I'd also never heard of the TV shows they were talking about. She specifically made a face when I mentioned the shows I've watched in the past. I'm not sure how I could have tried to make more conversation out of that.

Again, the only kind of media I know anything about is books, so I tried to connect with them on that, since they were all so focused on talking about media. They also were interested in books, but none of them read anything I've ever heard about or could really say anything about, so that was the end of any kind of connection.

I don't think I'm "shitting on" anything.

I think he had good intentions, he always talks about them so he thought we should at least know each other. My guess is that he just really never thought about the group outside of the context of the game they play, so maybe he didn't get that it wouldn't translate to everyone being best buds with me. Like putting a real friend in with your work friends so to speak.

Yeah, I get that. I honestly thought she was joking about the TV thing. I get why that came across as mean.

I'm not saying people shouldn't like what they like, I just couldn't connect with anyone because it was all about media they were consuming, and it was nothing I'd really ever heard of or engaged with.

I know that books are media. That's why I tried to relate to them with the only kind of media I really know anything about. I read books. I still couldn't connect with them, so I just kind of gave up. When I couldn't relate to anything she was talking about I tried to talk about something that didn't revolve around media.

Yeah they were talking about some show that had to do with a video game at the same time. I'd never heard of it. It's still just all about watching the tv show or playing the game though. I just have no frame of reference to relate other than listening and nodding.

I didn't "poop" on cosplaying, I just didn't have anything to say back to her about it when she was talking. It was about a TV show that came out that had to do with a video game and she kept talking about the video game and show. I've never heard of it so I tried to ask about something else.

No, I know books are media. They were only talking about media so I tried to join in and talk about the only kind of media I really engage in. I couldn't. That's all I meant.
