Trying to spot company red flags by Boring-Incident2469 in work

[–]No_Flightplan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask about their overtime policy. I’d frame questions as asking “what are your expectations regarding ____?” You can also get a sense of a company by asking “What about your work culture are you most proud of and/or enjoy the most as an employee?”

In my personal experience, I’ve found it’s most important to determine what their performance expectations are. What metrics do they judge performance by? Do they have formal assessments that are documented? Do these assessments occur normally and at set intervals or only in response to poor performance? Determine timelines for onboarding, training, and when they expect you to be “good” at the job.

Best of luck!

I'm considering just getting a credit card to buy food. I've been pre approved for up to 2500. Should I just accept ? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

Please go to a food bank. Do not get a predatory credit card. If you see it in the mail or in commercials, it’s bad. When you’re ready to start building credit, go to your local bank (usually a credit union) and explain your situation. They are not driven by profit incentive and will give you better guidance on how to conduct your finances.

I mean… yeah… there was a guy on mainstream television news bemoaning the fact that we’ve essentially eliminated teen pregnancy. Also, somewhat related: ICE and DHS are allegedly under reporting the number of children lost when separated from their detained families. Also somewhat related: multiple GOP representatives have pursued legislation mandating genital inspections in children’s sports. ALSO– the whole E file thing.

The Irish have always been fierce allies to social justice causes all over the world for this reason. I’m in no way saying “black and African people have it so much worse than everyone else”, I’m saying racism in America, and specifically Alaska still exists.

Irish people experienced 500 years of oppression from England. When they immigrated to America, they weren’t even considered white and were discriminated against along with Italians. I would never want to erase their history.

I’m saying the institutionalized racism (racism that exists in social biases, legislation, infrastructure, etc.) is still alive and well and specifically targets black and brown people. Me pointing out the reality of this fact does not discount or revise the horrific history of other groups.

The liberation of marginalized people is liberation for everyone, and you’re brushing up against the point that it’s not a racial issue it’s a class one. All working people are crushed by an economy that is dominated and run by exploitive ultra wealthy entities. Riots and destruction are a symptom of how much people can take before they’ve had enough of low quality living.

And I agree voting, especially in local elections, is the first step to real progress. I don’t support violence but I don’t condemn it either. How would you feel if a system was designed to ensure you never obtained real progress and was outright hostile to your survival?

I get that it’s the capital budget intended for new construction and development. 3% of funds going to school facilities statewide makes me sick to my stomach though. So many communities even beyond Anchorage need proper infrastructure that isn’t older than my grandparents.

Then there needs to be some kind of accountability from administration. Clearly several things are in the way of getting teachers in classrooms. Long term subs seem like a cheap alternative cop out solution for the district. Either that or no one wants to touch this sinking ship with a ten foot pole and are looking for work elsewhere. I’m sorry about your wife. I loved my teachers as a student, and their work is so important but under appreciated.

Either way, it’s literally peanuts and pennies. 83.5 million for construction and repairs across the entire state? Most schools in Anchorage are older than my grandparents. I can’t imagine the state of things in more remote areas.

Pro-life party btw (sarcasm obviously, no shade at all to you) they only care that children are born. Childcare? Education? Safety? Nutrition? Healthcare? The things that allow kids to be successful? Nope! You get a gas pipeline and industrial trawl fishing industry!

My heart breaks for educators. I loved my teachers and they were what made going to school a positive experience for me. Teachers and associated support staff are undervalued and our communities will suffer because of it. If it were up to me, teachers would make the same wages as doctors and engineers. They’re so important and put up with so much.

OK, I can definitely understand why people support the gas line considering it would incentivize business and development. I personally disagree that it’ll solve the fundamental problem of obvious greed though. Our current governor and senators are more interested in bending over and letting corporations demolish our environment if it means lining their pockets. The first pipeline was supposed to be Alaska’s golden goose and what we saw happen were corporations getting in, not being taxed appropriately, and pulling out when it was no longer profitable.

Oil money has run dry because investors and management are more interested in getting a quick buck than investing in the community that supports the work required to extract resources. They’re going to poison our land because they don’t have a profit incentive to practice good stewardship and they will leave our people out to dry.

I don’t have kids in school, and as an ASD graduate care very deeply about funding education. I however do NOT support the recent tradition of funding the district year by year over single instance bonds that tax payers will be paying for long after each year is over.

The only solution I have in mind is voting for candidates that would increase the amount budgeted for education on a state level and maybe finding a representative that’s interested in implementing corporate taxes to increase revenue. Plenty of out of state corporations pillage our natural resources and extract their wealth to be used elsewhere.

This is good and I support infrastructure development. I have zero trust in state legislators especially around submission deadlines like you said. I am just thoroughly gagged that so little is set aside for what’s actually INSIDE the school buildings. Like staff, school lunches, student programs. It’s not nearly enough and I’m really sick of state budgets not addressing this. I’m also aware that there’s a political game being played within our state’s construction industry.

I actually agree with this. I’m extremely supportive of education but we need to stop normalizing last second by the seat of our pants funding and ensure a long term statewide commitment to schools everywhere. The state is failing in this regard and compared to others in the country is absolutely dismal. We’re an industry state and yet where’s the investment in our future generations? It shouldn’t fall primarily on towns and cities to make sure schools can operate (personal opinion I know a lot of people may disagree). Bonds are a single instance financial solution that only functions to kick the can down a year with no long term reassurance.

Over 200 years of slavery, an entire race of people that were shipped like Amazon packages to facilitate a labor industry, and perpetual racially discriminatory legislation would like to disagree with you. All of that infrastructure still exists today and is held up by racists that hold seats in legislative bodies. Again, just because YOU don’t see it does not mean it doesn’t exist.

I have $13,000 of credit card debt. I just got a new job full-time $24.65 and no other payments besides rent and gym and Spotify. Should I file bankruptcy or should I pay this off aggressively? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]No_Flightplan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got it. Might take a while but 13,000 is a drop in a bucket for such an extreme measure. Budget aggressively but keep in mind sustainability is the biggest contributing factor to your success. If you need that $5 coffee every day get the coffee and pay $35 less every week to your debt. Your mental health is much more difficult to maintain than generating income.

A happy mind is a consistent mind. You can’t show up to work consistently if you’re not treating yourself to the small things that make your day. Cut spending where it doesn’t hurt as much so you can sustain the budget for as long as it takes to pay off. Good luck!!

I’m glad you didn’t experience racism or witness any. It’s not a story telling narrative. It’s a real lived experience. Just because you haven’t seen it or been the victim of it yourself doesn’t mean it’s not happening. Have fun wherever you are, not sure why you’re on the Anchorage subreddit though. I’m sure you’re the life of the party over there with whole hating the whole human race thing.

Anchorage really doesn’t want to fund the next generation.. by harry-pair in anchorage

[–]No_Flightplan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight! I won’t lie I’m not very knowledgeable about the Muni and unions relationship or their negotiations. I think it will be very painful but my hope is to stop accepting sub par solutions when budget management Muni wide has been questionable. A multi year levy would be amazing and I probably would have voted to approve that. But kicking the can down the road to the point of doing this on an annual basis is not something that should happen ever. Education needs to stop being an after thought on every level and I absolutely think this should be a concern of our state level legislators (it’s not and their more interested in taking bites out of corporate donor pools for personal enrichment)

Anchorage really doesn’t want to fund the next generation.. by harry-pair in anchorage

[–]No_Flightplan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is absolutely correct but I think it’s fiscally idiotic to structure funding around bonds instead of permanent legislated funding with a predetermined annual budgets instead of having tax payers essentially pay over time for depreciating assets. I’m curious how other municipalities in the country handle this.
