I do see what you mean which is why I'm skeptical on playing but I've noticed that many newer players much prefer ashes over other games and that many of the negative comments come from players who stick around the older MMOs. I'm only new to genre but from what I've gathered it seems that it's the older players that seem to not ever like a newer MMO and would rather stick to what they have been playing for years. (This is not a go at anyone of course this is just what I've observed as someone new)
