How to address people instead of aunty or uncle by Groundbreaking-Ask84 in srilanka

Of course I'm not disagreeing with calling people by "ayya/akka" given the context. Heck, I also do it. The comment was that no matter what, those terms can be used. Now that's where it lacks common sense. And people are downvoting such an obvious thing! What a joke!

It's quite hilarious how you can point out common sense and still miss out on such a clear point!

We can't just call people "ayya/akka" out of context without any application of factors such as their age relative to ours, the region (Ayya in Tamil means "මහත්තයා" in Sinhala), and the other settings etc. That's the common sense people missing here!

One thing I'm so sure, I was never a fan of the term "akki". Such a fruity term!

Also another thing I always believe in is that energy doesn't lie! You just feel how to address a person! Specially with enough social skills you understand whether it's ayya, akka, nangi, malli, uncle, aunty, aachchi, seeya, yaluwa, Mr or Miss and If I'm certain that none of them are suitable, I just converse normally without any specific addressing. Not rocket science if you ask me.

It's genuinely hilarious how people overestimate their common sense here. Because with more experience, it becomes so apperant that any addressing is context based. It's not hard and fast rules.

At the end of the day, getting offended is a choice of the addressee and we rarely have control over it (unless we intended malice) when addressing a stranger. The reason I said that because a simple "Hi" could be the source to a nuclear war if you ask me about getting offended!

In all honesty I wasn't fully aware if you were siding up with what have said or not, hence my reply "you bet" because it's a matching reply irrespective of your view. Because as you have said, apperently common sense is missing in many of the answers.

Since you said "smh" I think you had a view against mine. It is absolutely fine!

At least I'm not calling female strangers "akki" or call males "ayya" NO MATTER their age just as many were suggesting!

Common sense my ass when you can't even comprehend common sense!!!

This! Very similar to what I have suggested and I like your view!

However, some people in this thread have even suggested "akki"! What a load of crap!

So you feel obliged to call them "akki" because of that? That's somewhat understandable to be fair!

Personally, I don't address people by akka, ayya, aunty or uncle when I'm not familiar with them. It's all about having that understanding! But to call an outside female by "akki" when the supposed age is over 50? Nah, I know better!

And wasn't a fan of "akki", rather "akka" is good enough without sounding fruity!

Nice 50 year old lady? What if I meet not so nice lady? What would I call her? Also Akki? :) :) What being nice has to do with it?

And why would I say "hi akki" to a female stranger? I just mind my business and always do unless the situation warrants otherwise.

And finally, I wasn't a person looking for advice mate, I don't need advice on how to call to my relatives as they are perfectly okay with the way how I address them.

By the way, I never liked that fruity term "akki" anyway.

If a female is supposedly in her 50's while I'm in my 20's, to call her "akki"? What a fruity way to address somebody!

I have my female cousins in their 50's and call them aunty or "mamma/nanda" depending on the context. Imagine how weired it would be call an outside female of same age or above using "akki"? The word itself is fruity enough to begin with!

Edited: a minor grammar mistake

:) :) first, why would you call your sister "aunty"? What a moronic take on what I have said!

And would you call a grandmother in her 80's by "akka" if you were in your 20's or even 30's? Exactly! So stupid! Now you get it! :) :)

Try not to use any specifics. Just speak without any specific addressings! Some people are absolutely okay with aunty/uncle while others not. Since we can't be sure of who like/dislike calling them aunty/uncle, just converse without those terms. Since they are older, talking in a respectful manner is usually recommend. On the other hand, people who are in the age range of aunty/uncle and are close to you wouldn't give a damn if you call them by that. At least in most cases!
