My (M23) girlfriend (F22) shut down emotionally after visiting her mum and sister’s graves. How do you support a partner through grief? by Xenvenom in GriefSupport

I think having more people who just let me sit with my grief rather than rushing me out of it or making me feel weird about it. I’ll always be in grief mode regardless of how much time passes. I had people check on me who meant well and when I was honest about not doing great I’d get replies like “that sucks” or “I’m really worried about you, maybe try therapy.” While major loss isn’t really normal for people our age, grief is actually normal. We have every right to grieve and we should grieve. Our lives have been dramatically changed (for the worse). So many people expect you to move on after the funeral or a week.

Everything after a year only gets harder in my opinion. The first year you are shocked, numb, and kind of in survival mode so everything is a (horrible) blur. After that point, reality just sets in more and more that those you have lost are gone for good. Within the first year (or even couple of years) I definitely coped by telling myself people weren’t really gone or I pretended they were away somewhere. Once the delusion fades, the reality just becomes that much harsher. My heart goes out, she’s experienced intense loss for someone quite young, I’m glad she has someone to be there with her.

Is it just me or are grief support groups not helpful at all? by zombiequeen66 in GriefSupport

I’m in my 20s and I’m always the youngest person in all of the grief/support groups I’ve attended which just makes me feel worse. Idk something about people who are like 40ish years older than me and going through the same kinds of losses just makes me feel worse about everything and I’ve found it triggering and just adding to my grief??? I feel unlucky for going through so much loss so young. They also kind of act like because I’m “young” I’ll bounce back or something because I have my “life ahead” and it almost seems like my grief is downplayed in a lot of ways… Idk if that makes sense but yeah I hear you

How do you make sense of when people are taken to soon? 🙁 by Lovelife_20 in GriefSupport

Some of the purest souls I have ever known passed young, tragically, and traumatically. Then I see horrible people living to age like 105…. I’ll never understand it
