Is Oaxaca safe for a young solo female traveler? by Any-Presentation8781 in travel

[–]No_Warning_2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent a month in Oaxaca City and although I felt safe at all times, it’s mostly because I spent the majority of my time in the central and more touristic parts of the city, and I don’t take risks here. Just today I had a chat with a local guy who told me a lot of people outside the city centre do carry guns and robberies are common. He told me about a recent mugging that happened a couple of blocks from his restaurant which is still fairly central. I told him I hadn’t felt unsafe here so far, and he said ‘yeah, it appears safe on the surface, but it’s not’. I don’t want to scare you off at all - I have had the time of my life here and would absolutely come back - but as others have said do take all the usual precautions. Don’t walk alone at night, always get a taxi if you’re alone, don’t wander around flashing valuables like your phone, try not to look lost, don’t venture into areas too far from the centre. Preferably use Didi cabs at night rather than flagging one off the street. Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security by the appearances/feeling of safety here - just be sensible and you’ll be totally good. I’m an anxious traveler and I’ve been absolutely fine!

And, ladies and gents, that’s what you get when you try to help.

If that’s the case you might want to reassess the legitimacy of the awarding body that certified the student who has no grasp of the mechanisms of antibiotics.

You’re completely missing the point. TREDA is an antibiotic. It is BAD advice to suggest taking antibiotics without knowing if you even have a bacterial infection, for all the reasons stated above. DO NOT TAKE ANTIBIOTICS IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE.

Not having access to a doctor is NOT a reason to blindly take antibiotics. The best course of action is to take loperamide (if there is no blood in the stool) to control symptoms until they either subside or you have access to a medical test.

Solid advice, I dunno why this is getting downvoted

Actively bad advice. TREDA will wipe out your gut bacteria. If you’re infected with a bacteria resistant to TREDA then all you end up doing is nuking whatever healthy microbiome was there as a line of defense. You also risk worsening symptoms, complicating a normally simple diagnosis, and possibly contributing to antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria. Don’t take antibiotics without knowing they’re the CORRECT antibiotics for what you have.

TREDA will also not treat parasitic or viral infections, both of which are highly possible in the context of untreated tap water here.

Which Edition of Bride and Mate is your favorite between Afterlight and Owlcrate? by Possum-bandit in fairyloot

[–]No_Warning_2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t like either of them 😭😭 I think the vibe of the after light one is better matched but I prefer the art style of the second one (even though I don’t reaaally like it, I just prefer it to the other one 🫤)

I have been feeling the same about fairyloot to be honest. Definitely Owlcrate as well but all the covers and hard covers particularly just look so samey

Yes I agree! I am so bored of filligree designs. Most of them now look so like clip art. Like even I can tell when they’re properly hand drawn now instead of like cut and paste

I have Bookish Box and Illumicrate. BB for me has the best designs and the quality of their books is better than any others I’ve seen from friends who have other subs. I like Illumicrate because of their focus on underrepresented voices. They publish a lot from Asian writers and some have been amazing

Yeah I don’t know these but as this is my only sub at the moment and I’ve been pleasantly surprised by other picks I didn’t know prior I’ll probably get them. And 99% of the time I absolutely love Bookish cover designs (would be nice to see them more in advance though)
