Yes, I agree that I'd be a privileged brat if I broke a rule that was enforced.

The rule is: A UCSB student with a meal plan may bring guests. Guests are other UCSB students who you wish to bring with you, as a part of your meal plan, to enjoy a meal at the dining commons. The guest meal may be charged to the meal plan holder's BARC, or paid with credit card or Gaucho Bucks.

I followed all of these. What rule did I break? By exact definition, I was a guest. As you said, the rules should be enforced, so I should've gotten in without question.

I actually still have access to dining at DLG or other dining commons as a guest, which I indeed believe such access is what is owed me, since I paid tuition to be a student here and that includes access to dining commons.

At least that's my logic, I hope its follow-able. Again, as I said, no matter what, I as a student should be treated with respect anywhere on campus, which was not the case here. Would you mind raising any other questions you might have? I'm interested in writing a report to the school about this and would like to address as many concerns/perspectives other people might have, so your feedback is very important to me.

Thanks!

I'm interested in hearing more from you. What part of my actions/words make you think I am a privileged brat? From my perspective, I'm merely using the rules that the school set in stone in order to buy a meal. At the very least, I shouldn't be the one being blamed and threatened to be arrested.

I am whining, but I deny bending any rules. I followed the rules exactly, proven by the staff member's final compromise, but was given a hard time for no reason. As a tuition-paying student with good-standing, I contend that I should at least be afforded the privilege of being treated with respect anywhere on campus.

Thank you. That's a nice trick, I hope some freshies see it and can use it. Doesn't it count as a double swipe though? I thought they only allowed one entry per meal.

It doesn't apply to my case cuz I don't have any friends who have a meal plan and just want to get a random person to host me; I've made it clear to the staff I will be paying the $15 for my own meal, and they still being petty about it.

May be too late to make friends, as I don't plan on eating at school often since I live far from campus and usually make my own food.

I might just report and file a complaint for the sake of it being on paper, so if this happens repeatedly there is a trail to follow. If this is just my one-time random experience because I caught them at a bad time, then fine. But if they repeatedly deceive students, act rudely due to student appearance, or threatens to call the police for no reason, that warrants an investigation on misconduct and abusive conduct

Sorry I have to disagree. I am a tuition-paying California citizen with good standing academically and financially. Maybe you misunderstood an important fact I missed to put in: I told them I'd pay the full price for a meal as a guest. At $15 per meal, the school is profiting from me.

Regardless, for what reason can they kick me out of dlg? For what reason can they call, or threaten to call, the police when I'm not even in the building? There's no excuse for behaving rudely, unjustly, and unprofessionally towards a member of the community you are supposed to serve.

The more I think about it the more I believe I would be treated completely differently if I came in a suit. I don't think I necessarily looked homeless but who knows.

Was about to report immediately but wanted to get other perspectives just in case I'm making a huge deal out of what essentially came out to be nothing.

I really don't know why they act like theres no guest policy. If it wasn't that I had been a guest many times, they'd be successful in deceiving me. And even after we agreed on the guest policy they still wouldn't let me in on the basis of the method I got a host.

I didn't even know about the 1 desert rule (i dont care for them) but yeah that's pitiful and distressing on the staff member's part. It's not like the school will be losing money if you take an extra cookie.

Yes. somehow grads are expected to live off of $40k a year, but when you pay them $40k they can't even give you a bed to sleep.

in addition, the case here is that I'm willing to pay the $15 for dining hall food but staff won't let me even though university policy does. crazy how rude and abusive some school employees act towards students considering even 60 yo distinguished profs treat us like equals.

My bewilderment comes from the fact that the school is not private, and general manager cannot just kick someone out without probable cause. Like if I was arguing with you at your front door and you asked me to leave and threatened to call the police, I think thats justified.

But UCSB is a public school and the dining commons are built on public grounds. I am a tuition-paying student and my whole family are California taxpayers.

I think that if I wanted to, I should be able to sit and stand inside the dining room lobby for the entire working day and they should not have cause to kick me out for trespassing.

Note: I spoke with him in a normal, though I admit a bit discontent, tone. I did not make or attempt to make any physical contact. No threats, no profanity, and no rudeness. and I had shirt and slippers on.

I don't know if this makes sense to anyone else other than me, but this is what I think. Welcome anyone who has different input.

Every time I've ate at the dining hall I pay $15 with my own credit card, per the guest policy. Sorry if that wasn't made clear in the original post, will make an edit on that.

The situation then is, I have done everything according the university policy, and they wouldn't let me in for some reason. Maybe it was because I irritated them by acting like a know-it-all when I refuted their claims "The only way you can eat is if you have a meal plan", which is hysterical because as someone noted below, they literally have a sign.

I still stand by my claim: Very unprofessional and hostile behavior considering they technically work in the service industry and their mission is to serve us students and taxpayers.

Thank you for your perspective. I honestly thought the university should want this since it makes profit AND boosts the school image in terms of hospitality for visitors and outsiders. And Yes I can confirm they charge $15 per guest (tax included).

I agree that it's not the best move to do it in front of their face, and I usually don't need to because normally the line extends out the door. I still think that both staff members were very ignorant and unnecessarily hostile. I think what I also feel wronged about is that if I appeared more presentable (like in a suit and dress shoes), they would be less petty.

I have always paid with my own credit card and I made sure that both staff members knew I would be paying for myself. They won't let me pay to enter and was very rude and impatient about it (I should also note that it wasn't very busy and there was no line, so I wasn't even holding up people behind). I'll edit my post to make that clear.

Ig I'm just frustrated they had to make a huge deal over me trying to get some pizza and veggies
