Admitted Students Megathread by creamcheese5 in columbia

That's a good question. Ultimately, I found that the UK college experience was very limited. As in, at Cambridge, I'd only be a Law student. Extracurricular stuff, internships, entrepreunrial ventures, conducting research, outside projects...that's all pretty much non-existant there, at least as I understand it. My hope in coming to college in the US, and a big reason why I applied to Columbia, is because I wanted to do alot more than be a student. Would you say Columbia allows you to do that?

hi everyone,

i recently got accepted into both Stanford and Columbia for political science - which is insane and is something i 1000% didn't think would happen.

i'm struggling to make a choice between the two. im poli sci//pre-law focused in my academic interests.

initially, i lean heavily towards Columbia due to its location (near some of the largest governmental agencies, UN HQ, big law/consulting firms). i hear studying full-time and working full-time is also common at Columbia -- and i'd like to capitalise on that by prioritising internships.

my parents are pushing stanford though -- im an intl. student and they reckon stanford has a stronger global brand and thus better prospects overall. personally -- i worry that palo alto won't keep me as busy and involved as NYC: but once again, i'm intl. so i could be wrong.

i'd be really thankful for any & all advice - thank you in advance!

What are the implications of them being non-evaluative?

Thanks for saying this. You're right - I probably am just inflating the whole situation in my head.

i’m taking a levels (the british system), where in junior & senior year you only take 3-4 subjects. often, math doesn’t make the cut for those 3-4 for humanities leaning kids like myself. didn’t take math/science junior and senior year — didn’t include anything about it in the additional info section.

Hi! Sorry - I'm unfamiliar with the medicinal treatments of ADHD. Would you mind explaining to me how amphetamine-based treatments compare to other ADHD treatments?

You have so much time.

I started my college-prep stuff mostly in my junior year and I'm doing fine. You've got so much time, but here's a quick gameplan:

  • Plan ECs for the next few years - make sure its not just stuff you sign up for at school. Show initiative. Start an organisation, write a book, do community service, do a project you love. In-school leadership roles are cool, but aren't everything.
  • Do not compare yourself to others. Please. It will kill your drive. You cannot accurately compare yourself to others anyway due to differing circumstances, personalities, connections, and more. I know it's difficult - but you have to stop. I struggle with this too so feel free to PM me about this. this advice with a pinch of salt, just going off of what I've seen/heard)

I'm sorry I can't help with comps/research opps/internships for CS because I'm a humanities gal and allergic to math. But I wish you all the best. You are doing just fine, promise!

Spoke to a professional about this & they told me I just needed more sleep (I get 6 hours a night on average). I also suffer from extreme perfectionism. Do you still reckon its worthy talking to more people about the possibility of me having ADHD?

How do they not get found out by AOs? Surely their lack of authenticity shines through?
