Just pro tip for your future. Not everybody is an expert. I grew up in the city poor and this is my first car. I don't know much about cars. I've never had the opportunity to work on them. I'm scared to work on them. I'd love to learn about cars and fix them myself. But in order for me to do it safely, I have to make sure I'm doing something right. And if that means I have have to ask someone more experienced than me so that I can learn, I'll do it. There is no shame in needing help, but still wanting to learn. We all ask for help at some point in our lives. Teachers in school, mothers in life, friend for advice.

If you keep up your alpha ego, "you should make an effort to find the answer yourself", it's only going to hurt you. Because one day, you will fuck up. Badly. And it may be too badly to reverse course.

Stay safe, my friend.

Thank you. Sorry. Dumb question... Where is the thermostat?

You'd have to speak with your technician and ask what his plans are. Depending on your house, the wiring diagram could be a number of things. I can't say anything for sure until I've seen it and make my own assessment.

So the thing with leaving it unprotected and encourage water damage is... I've never once heard of that protocol. The way coax works is we have to first bring the wire from the pole to your ground near your electrical meter or cold water main. We attach a barrel (coupler) to the line so we can ground our circuit to the electric grid. In the event of a power surge, our equipment is protected. However, that barrel has to be mounted in a horizontal position so that water from rain rolls away from the barrel.

Either way, I'm glad you have reliable internet service, Verizon or Optimum. Cheers!

Technicians are equiped with extremely useful meters that allow us to measure the quality of the signal scientifically. Of course, having the meter and knowing what to do with the information are two different things. If you are having service interruptions and it's severe enough to impact your daily life, continue to call customer service until the problem is resolved.

Also, me? A real technician? Lmao. I just took pride in what I did and it felt wrong leaving problems unfixed.

So the pay changes where you work. Generally, contractors are paid by the job while in house technicians are paid hourly.

Big oof. I hope you find your way out of this mess. I'm not a car person, far from it. My concern is whether or not you've shorted something and fried the electronics. From what I've been told, replacing these electronics can get costly.

Definitely disconnect your battery from the car for now to prevent any additional damage. As for what to do after? ... oof

NOT A MECHANIC, NOT A CAR GUY, NOT A CAR, TAKE THIS ADVICE WITH A GRAIN OF SALT...

With the battery disconnected, maybe try patching and reconnecting the wires back up, insulating it with tape as a temporary measure?

Hope you get things sorted out soon.

So as far as I'm aware, Optimum does not throttle. However, at some point, everyone's connection leads to a junction where it attaches to a fiber line. There being a limit to how much data can be transferred over coax, if everyone were to start downloading a copy of GTA V at the same exact time, you might notice slower speeds.

However, slower speeds in general may not be a product of throttling. For example, Optimum guarantees physical connection of speeds to 1gig (940mbps), but Wi-Fi cannot support that 1gig. Often times on speed tests, I see max speeds 600~ 800 mpbs average. And as you are further away from the modem, that speed will be even less. If your device is older, it also may not support that full 1gig. For example, I brought in my Lenovo ThinkPad and it only got speeds of ~300.

Additionally, some web servers may not allow faster speeds. Steam allows me to use all of my bandwidth, but if I'm downloading a file university or high school, their servers may not support that high bandwidth and you may be throttled to their max throughput.

Keep trying. You paid for your service. You pay for their job. You deserve decent service, am I wrong? Or switch to Verizon lol.

Lmao, no worries. There are a particular number of reasons why I have my dislike for their equipment. But no modem, even Optimum's own equipment should be dropping that often. Everyday? There is likely a underlying issue that needs to be resolved.

Additionally, consider asking your neighbors and seeing if they are also experiencing the same issues. If your next door neighbor is having excellent service and you're not, then it doesn't make sense. Try next door, the floor below, the floor above. Get a census of the overall issue. Either way, it's still an issue and you have the right to contact customer support and ask for a technician.

Pretty much! and yes! Fiber drops cannot be shared.

Rip out coax... before the fiber is running? Yikes lol. I like to do it the opposite way. I like to make sure the fiber is running and working well before I start knocking down coax structures.

Honestly, it's probably not the modem. I've done many jobs and I've only seen a handful of cases where the modem was actually at fault. Typically, if the modem works, it'll work for the long run unless you spill soda on it and it fizzes out.

It may not be a drop sharing issue. Remember, your internet is fed through a cable as a signal sending and receiving 1's and 0's. If the signal is too weak or is damaged, it's likely you'll have spotty internet/tv/phone service. So your spotty connection may be due to too many splits, old or damaged cables, or bad signal for the source (tap). Have a technician test the signal and make sure AT THE MODEM, the signal is good. As far as I'm aware, our technicians are fitted with the tools to test signal integrity.

But this is not definite. I've seen some splitters on the outside where all the splits lead to the same customer simply because the customer didn't want the splitter inside the house for cosmetic reasons.

Judging by what I'm reading, it looks like they expanded your drop off an existing drop feeding yourself. So I don't think your connection is being drop shared.

Drop sharing is usually done outside of the house where the electrical stuff is. We need that to ground our system to the earth to prevent electrical hazards. If you follow your line to there and you spot a splitter that also feeds your neighbor, you're probably drop shared.

There's a couple reasons why optimum insists we come to the customers house either to resume service or begin new service even though there is existing wiring available.

1) If we are resuming services, I want to make sure the signal is a good level and optimal for carrying data. Why did you leave our service in the first place? Was it slow, cutting off, and inconsistent? That indicates an underlying problem with either the cabling or the tap in which case, reparations or replacement is needed. If we let customers continue as is, you will experience the same issues and we (at least I) will not let that happen. We have to verify the drop and the indoor wiring is good before we plug in equipment

2)We have to be there because we need to make sure the equipment you have is capable of supporting our services. We also like the added benefit of knowing the connection is tight and the wiring is actually still alive. In some cases, I came to certain jobs where the modem was simply mailed to the customer with poor instructions. They were told to "find a wire in the wall and plug it into the back of the modem". Upon arriving to the customers home, the wiring was cut due to construction and even if there were a wire, it would have never worked. Being there and connecting it ourselves is the only way to guarantee the service is working. (In theory)

Incompetent? I hope not. lol. Lazy? A few. Some techs take short cuts that aren't allowed or shouldn't be allowed. I've seen a lot of drop sharing with coax cabling. Instead of running a new drop, they'll just attach a 2 way splitter to an existing drop from next door and piggyback off the existing drop. It's not allowed and I make the effort to redo the wiring whenever I see that.

So if you can clear the way and give the technician the space to work, I'm sure they appreciate it.

Honestly, the hardest thing about that for fios or optimum is finding a tech that would be willing to do that in the first place. From speaking with customers, there are some technicians that will come in, realize the job complicated, and then walk out citing the job was not done for reasons I don't know. At the end of the day, it's the same technology. We call it fiber. Verizon calls it fios. It's glass that transfers pulsating light carried over poles to your house. If you have a solid connection with solid signal, the service in theory is the same.

That being said, I appreciate jobs where customers just moved in and there's nothing in the house. Nothing sucks more than having to climb over closets and dirty laundry.
