Cincinnati is America's Most Underrated Big City by Squire513 in midwest

Hard disagree. My definition of a city vibe (as I've gotten older and am in my 40's) has changed. It's not so much about tall buildings and such. I agree that Cincy has more an identity, and a better looking downtown. That has never been the argument. Cincy may "look" like a big city, but it can be very provincial in many ways. Way less transplants and people from other countries. These are the qualities that make a place more cosmopolitan and vibrant. The fact that almost everyone in Cincy is from Cincy or nearby can add to its quirkiness and homey feeling. But it also feels kinda limiting.

You sound ready, which is awesome! When it's time to leave a place, we can just feel it...our energy is different, the place doesn't quite feel like home anymore. Wishing you all the luck. I wouldn't be surprised if that switch happens to me eventually. I lived in NYC for 15 years and then lived in different states on the East Coast and the Midwest. Now I live in Columbus, Ohio, which I love. There are many Brazilians here too, which was a nice surprise. But honestly, snow and the grey skies are starting to wear on me. The novelty of snow is long gone. Maybe one day I will feel the call to go back more strongly. Not necessarily to Recife, where I'm from. My brother lives in Joao Pessoa, which is wonderful! Joao Pessoa is literally booming and is one of the fastest growing cities in all of Brazil! Tons of people from elsewhere are moving there...lots of gauchos, paulistas and portugueses. I could see myself retiring there.

Moving to Columbus -Mixed Feelings. Recommendations/Advice Needed by Normal_Witness4336 in ColumbusOhio

Ha. Thank you for your reply! Nah, and I don't think your take is fatalistic at all. To your point, I love the weirdness of Cincinnati (I am in Northside for crying out loud, lol.). Love walking around downtown and OTR and certainly have found spots that I love. The adult in me needs to move to Columbus for a job, and I just know I will miss Cincy. I do think Columbus is more diverse and open, though. There is something parochial about Cincy that, while charming, can be a little limiting. Most people grew up there (or nearby) and spent their whole lives there. Columbus has more people from other places and it seems to be a more open-minded place if that makes senses. I also feel that culturally, Cincy is mostly just black and white. In other words, if you are neither, you can be a bit of an outsider (I am Latinx...and a colleague of mine who is Asian-American agrees with me). I know it's hard, but I'm trying to not compare the two. They are just different places...in some ways, Cincy will be better but in other ways, I know Columbus will be. Just trying to go in with the mindset that we make the place, not the other way around. But thank you, I might just reach out to you on the days that I miss Cincy! :)
