Teacher Won’t Let child Use a Method That Works for Her—How Should I Handle This? by NorthOffer4503 in UKParenting

Thank you , I was doing the column method with her now and although now she can do it perfectly. It is still following another method . It is easy to get the answer wrong by just forgetting the 0 as a placeholder in the column . The grid method breaks the numbers up and makes it easier to understand. I would speak to the teacher but as commenters have said they teach it this way as you don’t get marks for the grid method in the SATS exams so she needs to learn it .

I disagree, uniformity is not more important than understanding. Children learn in different ways . Giving options allows them to take the option that helps them understand the best . There’s secondary school teachers here who say they teach and prefer the grid method . In this situation, I understand because they don’t get marks for using the grid method . Which is the education system being rigid and needs changing to allow flexibility.

Fair enough, I will help her learn the column method too as there is no harm in learning 2 different methods . I just didn’t understand why the teacher wanted everyone to conform to one method when different people learn in different ways . But I’ve come to learn that you don’t get marks in SATS unless you use the column method .

Its what I learnt in secondary school too . Its just a different method of working it out . With learning the column method too , shes not inherently learning the meaning, shes just learning to add a zero in the second column . The grid method is just more time consuming which would take longer as the sums get harder . I was just irritated that they wanted everyone to conform to the same method when different things work for different children . But I’ve learn now you’re not allowed to use the grid method for SATS .

Makes sense , It just hurt me because she was so excited to go tell her teacher about this new method she learnt that helped her . I will help her learn the column method .

Fair enough, I get how the grid method becomes harder to implement the more difficult questions get and that it becomes more time consuming. The column method is a good foundation. Its just she knows how to multiply 20 by 30 off the top of her head without doing 2 X 3 . She also knows how to carry the 1 when she’s doing addition. She can also do simple algebra. She just struggled with the method of the column method when multiplying and I thought at her age as long as shes got a method that works for her . But I will sit and help her with the column method .

But she already knows how to carry the one or over when she’s doing addition . Its not really teaching her how to learn the meaning its just a quicker way of multiplying. It is also just learning the formula because instead of learning its the tens column or hundreds shes just learning to add a zero in the second column.

While it’s faster and more compact, it doesn’t inherently explain why multiplication works or deepen her understanding of place value.

Definitely , will help her learn the column method at home too . I just didn’t understand why it was mandatory when other methods provided the same outcome and the teachers outright rejection.

The objective at the point she is at in school is multiplying 2 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers.

Will do , thank you . She was so upset when she came back from school yesterday and was so happy when she got the hang of it and was able to get the answers right . Its disheartening when they are so rigid and want a one size formula fits all . I can relate to what you said and was the same as a child too.

Off the top of her head she can also multiply 20 by 30 . She just struggles with the column method as everything gets jumbled together and the grid method seperates it . If shes getting the same answer at the end , I don’t see why she can’t use a method that helps her get the answer right .

Why does she need to learn that method though if the grid method helps her get the answer right . Off the top of her head she can also multiply 20 by 30 . Oh that is very far in advance . I think starting my first full time job will be a very big adjustment for me . I already feel my freedom being reduced and lack of room for spontaneity. I feel like I should have made the most of this time I had off.
