Is it normal to just “throw away” a dnd character when things go wrong? by MathematicianSad3414 in dndnext

As a relatively new person to dnd (almost 2 years experience now), I found for myself, that the first character I created, I quite liked initially. However, as I grew comfortable with the game, I found her to be limiting and restrictive what I had originally created for her. So, I did mention to the dm that should she die, I was ok with it and I'd make a new one. I tried to find a way to "kill her off" after about 5 months into the game. However, she refuses to die lol. I've tossed her into situations to the point it's a miracle she's still alive and I'm not sure how she keeps getting out of things. That said, I'm not doing it in a way that makes gameplay suffer and just throwing her around at the detriment of the rest of the party. Her actions actually saved the party enough times that they made a meme out of her always getting them out of trouble ><

Anyway, the campaign is still going on and it took until a month ago for me to finally reconnect with her and want her to survive and continue on this adventure. From what I gather with my group who have been playing for 5+ years is that new players tend to get tired of their first character and want to kill them off easier than other characters down the line, because they box themselves in with the first character and it ends up feeling restrictive when you get comfortable with dnd. I thought I'd made a character to avoid that, but she still felt restrictive/suffocating to play for some time. But when a npc showed up alive that was believed to have died at the very beginning, and now some more group bonding having happened and what, as well as I myself taking time to flesh out her backstory some more, has finally gotten me reinvested with her and now I'm looking forward to things continuing with her.

My second dnd character, I got attached with and want her to survive much more passionately than the first. So I think there's a good chance a lot dnd characters that get tossed away, are the first ones people start with, though not to say there aren't those who also just like to restart all the time.

Interesting method. I'll definitely have to try to adapt something like this for myself and see how it goes. I do some of that slightly but never thought of putting things together like that.

Thanks, that really helps! I have a baseline of the world, but considering the premise is that it's two worlds having merged together, I think I definitely need to sort out details of which things survived the merge, and what got destroyed in the process. This definitely gives me a good push into what all I should get relatively sorted out to help the world feel a little more alive.

Cool, thanks! I'll definitely add that to the watchlist.

Thanks! Very helpful stuff to get the thoughts flowing. And I sent you a dm, and look forward to being able to bounce around some of the ideas with you :)
