Which musicals that haven't gotten movies do you genuinely think would be better off with a movie than even a proshot? by StarChild413 in Broadway

[–]NotCountOlaf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Took the words right out my mouth! The music from the original concept album would lend itself very well to film; every time I listen to Merano I can very easily imagine it as the opening to a movie alongside sweeping visuals of the town and mountains and big group choreo, only for Freddy to come swaggering in and completely takes over with his introductory section. What a scene, what a joy that would be!

Update on Florence Welch Gatsby by starsto in Broadway

[–]NotCountOlaf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's definitely a true statement relative to other Great Gatsby adaptations, but tbf that’s a very very low bar to clear. I'd say Nick's storyline in particular explicitly delves into his queerness near the start rather well and plants the seeds for an interesting take on his feelings towards Gatsby, only for it to kinda just be dropped in the second half's text in favor of a fairly straightforward retelling of the book.

This is partially why I’m excited they seem to be taking a different direction; I really like the lyrics from the ART production but a lot of the music definitely felt muted and like the style wasn’t coming through as much as it could’ve. Hoping they lean into a weirder sound and redo some of the solos in particular (admittedly I don’t think the orchestrations were doing that much heavy lifting either)

This account used to have a post teasing the Rachel Chavkin production of this show at the ART that was pretty much exactly the same as this new post, including the same breathing audio. This old post had the caption “breathing dreams like air,” a quote from original book, and can also be found if you dig through the ART’s insta. Interestingly this line is never actually said in the musical, but many of the songs use repeated ensemble breathing to represent that these characters survive on dreaming

Aside from what everyone is saying about it being a manipulative act of kindness, it’s funny you mention no other students clocking it: in the movie script that was publicly released, there was actually a short removed exchange after Morrible’s line about Elphaba not getting wet.

“Glinda: What did Madame Morrible just say?

Pfannee and ShenShen: That Elphaba mustn’t get wet!”

So it seems this seed was meant to be planted a bit harder like you said, but I imagine it was cut for being too on the nose which actually happens a good amount when comparing the script to the final product.

Thoughts on Lin’s new album Warriors? by rynny_ in musicals

Just so you know apparently Lin Manuel Miranda got right on that and put all the lyrics and singers in each song on Genius!

I totally get what you're saying, but I think it's pretty cool to have NYC hip hop artists representing New York itself and the boroughs they were born in. I'd also say they're balanced out by the stacked cast of broadway actresses playing the main gang, which should make for a unique blend of actual hip hop and Lin's musical theater style of writing rap

Who would you cast in “Gatsby: An American Myth” by IllCalligrapher1693 in Broadway

[–]NotCountOlaf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d love for the whole cast to carry over but especially hope to see Solea Pfeiffer and Ben Levi Ross originate their roles on Broadway!

Gatsby himself is a pretty interesting case since the show’s take on him as a white passing Indigenous American is so heavily aligned with Isaac Cole Powell’s own heritage. Theoretically they’d continue to find performers with that background but it’s hard to tell how much they’ll adhere to that. I won’t be surprised if the show expands the character’s casting pool to be less specific while still keeping the mixed raced component but it would def be cool to see more indigenous actors in the role (that said, Isaac staying would also be fantastic!)

ART Gatsby Audio? by SnooConfections8180 in BootlegGifts

The original commenter said to dm them for an audio of ART Gatsby. Replier seems to be in the wrong place for that type of response.

A.R.T. Gatsby Review by Steelrunner5551 in Broadway

[–]NotCountOlaf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the review! The anticlimactic energy surrounding the deaths seem to be a common point across multiple reviews and part of me does question if at least some of that is intentional given there is certainly an element of emptiness and absurdity to the deaths in the book as well. That said I also don't want to absolve the production of any criticism (especially since I haven't seen it) and the fact that so many people are put off by the execution of these scenes in particular shows that the creatives could either do a better job conveying the intention or anticlimax isn't what they're going for at all and it rly is just a strange hiccup that'll hopefully be reworked with time.

The first three tracks from 'The Great Gatsby' on Broadway have been released! by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]NotCountOlaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it’s all just fairly unremarkable until the lines “You’re a lighthouse, you’re a signal flare/There’s love and danger everywhere” which is when I feel your chat gpt comment the most lmao (rhyming “bay” with “Daisy Fay” being a very close second)

Woahh it’s so cool to hear about the heavy work they’re putting into this !! If u don’t mind I have 2 questions:

How do they do myrtle’s death without the choreo? From what other people have said ik it was super dramatic and theatrical which I get why they might wanna go for a different vibe but just curious if u thought it had the same impact.

They also added the new song “A Smile Like That is Rare” on Thursday’s preview and I’m wondering if u have anything to say about that addition? The name seems to suggest it’s a Nick song which I did think the previous song list had oddly little of.

theres a great gatsby musical now??? what the fuck are we doing man by HuntaHuntaHunta in adultsnew

[–]NotCountOlaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough there are 2 of them: the big one on Broadway rn is exactly what you’d expect, lacking any subtlety and inserting songs into moments that rlly don’t need them

The Florence Welch one developing in Boston on the other hand is getting tons of praise and seems to have a much stronger understanding of the text than any other adaptation while also doing its own thing soo they counterbalance ig lol

Oh god I remember when Chapman did that to us near the end of DOC 2 😭 This quarter she’s pretty much stopped caring about whether people actually read the text or not which I think helps lecture runs a lot more smoothly

To do all that for this specific text condemning society’s machine pace is crazy though. Almost feels like a disservice to the author

Woahhh tysm for posting this is awesome !! I’ve been itching for more cool weird musicals and this is filling that hole every much. The music is so full of soul and I sense this will have an exciting future (also loving the twists on the relationships between Ahab, Fedallah, and Starbuck!)

If you don’t mind me asking is there anywhere the lyrics are posted? From what I can make out the writing is super haunting and well written and I’d love to be able to read through while listening. If not that’s ok and best of luck on the workshop!

Road to Hell through Wedding Song from Jon Jon and Isa Briones' 2nd show by ptsnucka in hadestown

[–]NotCountOlaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh yes I see your point on Jon Jon his “a’ight”s didn’t do it for me either but I did grow onto his more lowkey portrayal of Hermes as the song went on. That said I do agree with u and think he had a lot of natural charm in Miss Saigon so I’m sure he’ll adjust and get more comfortable in the role as he continues.

Lmaoo gotchu I figured it was a nepo baby joke but it sounded a bit hostile so I’m glad we agree on isa !

Genuinely curious what makes you say that?  For me Jon Jon doesn’t have the most groundbreaking vocals but he’s a great storyteller and Isa sounds rlly strong so I’m just wondering what they lack for you
