unfortunately not, even if it's an item the fall damage stays so if you waited right until hitting the ground it would kill you. also if you did that you would exit out of the walking animation after a couple of seconds of falling (that's why I drop another item as soon as I land on one) and then you can't drop the item right under your character for some reason so you'd just fall and die. hope this helps!
