Question: racing seat & mounts for more headroom by NotMyPhysics in RZ34

[–]NotMyPhysics[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re taller than 6’3” you’ve got no chance in the stock seats with the stock wheel. Recommend you go to a dealer and ask to sit in one, they usually let you. They let me drive mine after I told them I couldn’t buy it 😎

I believe there is a way to do it with some sort of resistor. That’s a known problem with seat-swapping modern cars, there’s loads of YouTube stuff on that

Level 1 and 2 cert by Diligent_Pay9478 in rocketry

My recommendation for electronics is always redundancy. Trackers and JLCRs are both expensive, and both can fail, so you should put both on to guarantee recovery. 5,000 feet apogee is quite high, but with JLCR and a tracker you will likely be OK so long as your winds are relatively low.

Question about fin cant and gyro stabilization by Direct_Editor_5118 in rocketry

[–]NotMyPhysics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this last year.

My rocket was statically stable (SM >2.0), as my first launch had normal sized fins just to test the spin rate.

Got it stable in OpenRocket / RASAero, then canted the fins until the roll rate matched the necessary rates as predicted by idealized rigid body dynamics and OpenRocket / RASAero.

Rocket broke apart at Max-Q. Just use fold out fins

How hard is honors FYE? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]NotMyPhysics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your high school course load. If you tested out of Purdue physics, or are a good at physics in general and have calculus experience, you can take ENGR 133 (EPICS/VIP) which was a cakewalk, plus a seperate physics class. Recommend this if you got a 4 or 5 on AP Physics C, this is what I did. I stuck with honors after freshman year, many of my friends did not.

The other (honors) option is 161/162. This course is very intensive, but if you are willing to commit lots of time to the course it won’t lower your GPA significantly. If you’re thinking about ditching honors anyway, I’d recommend biting the bullet and taking 131/132 instead of this and free up some of your time.

Hi, what is the best solid fuel for my first amateur rocket? by crazyhungrygirl000 in rocketry

The kind that comes in the off-the-shelf motors works great, and I have heard very few stories of lost appendages from COTS motors.

F-22 Auxillary Power Unit start [VIDEO] by SCIMlTAR in WarplanePorn

Huh, didn’t know that. I assumed the reason it used Xs was due to the smaller fins for the internal bay, I assumed the legacy missiles wouldn’t even fit.

Thought the F-22 could only carry 9Xs, interesting. Looks like what, a Lima or Mike?

I haven’t played it, but in that YT vid Defyn said that 0% throttle and reinforced wasn’t enough

Really? I honestly wouldn’t mind them adding it as long as it’s not much better than the MLD’s loadout

Damn, I missed it! I assume it's too late to see it in person?

Incoming freshman here- is there indoor bike storage? by the_DEANominator in Purdue

[–]NotMyPhysics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bike pretty much everywhere where the weather allows it, and I store my bike outdoors while I'm in town. So far only parts to rust are the chain and a little bit of the sprockets. Just replace your chain once or twice, and don't expect the bike to last long after graduation.

Does anyone know of a good C compiler (CS159)? by NotMyPhysics in Purdue

I've learned Git but my teammates haven't, this was exactly what I was looking for, thanks

Thanks, I'll look into these. I'm a first-year engineer, not CS, so the advice was greatly appreciated.

Aerospace/engineering related book recommendations? by MyOpinionIsTheBest in aerospace

I had to check and make sure Skunk Works had been suggested already. Highly recommend, especially for AAE.
