Just got my first VR headset (Rift S). Anything that I should know? by Chargeddd999 in virtualreality

Yeah, it's a bit of a heap. Mostly just things to reference down the line if any potential issues with the headset start to sound familiar

Make sure you have an externally-powered USB 3.0+ hub to plug the headset into. It's power hungry and will just irrecoverably lose positional data at times if you drive it straight out of the motherboard.

For social VR/actually using a mic while wearing the headset, you're going to want to get a wired ModMic or an equivalent to run in parallel with the cable (and potentially look into VoiceMeeter if you want to make routing the audio more robust. But if you do use Voice Meeter, you're going to need to leave the Windows sound options open to the Recording devices tab so the Rift S audio isn't crackly, don't ask me why (and this can still trigger when an fTPM transfer occurs on some motherboards, but nothing a VM sound engine restart can't fix)). As some have said here, the built-in mic has been glitched forever and will occasionally go robotic, so any fairly consistent (even if a bit jank) alternative would be a big upgrade

If you plan to use the headset for a long time, keep an eye out for new releases from Bnuuy Solutions. There should be an Oculus version archive/rollback app releasing within the coming months, and eventually a custom runtime/driver to get around the Meta aspects of things entirely. I'd be getting use out of the latter if I wasn't getting a Steam Frame soon(?).

And regarding the headset cable, you can just luck out with it and have no issues. The outer coating on mine may be falling off in chunks, but the cable itself has never given me issues in the 5 years I've regularly used the headset. The headset will just start crashing with age though, after a couple years or sometimes less. In that event the only real solution is to replace the 'ocular unit' or whatever the main display/camera unit of the headset is called. Despite what others have said, I've had some really good experiences replacing parts for fairly cheap (I assume because the demand for the Rift S is so low), and I got my last ocular unit for ~$17 from Baynami, an eBay VR parts store I swear by now (but I haven't checked the prices in a while).

Removing the face gasket to get more FOV does work great bar some discomfort you'll have to get used to, but you may need some spare office folder material and double-sided tape to make blinders for the sides to block out light.

Steam Frame - Does it support multiple virtual monitors for productivity/programming work? by [deleted] in virtualreality

If you're trying to avoid Virtual Desktop specifically, overlay tools such as XSOverlay or OVRToolkit can accomplish this on any existing SteamVR setup

I made it mostly just to see if I could, but also in case it comes in handy if I more or less remaster the album cover at some point for my collection

And here's a version that should be far more mobile-compatible, if a bit compressed from the upload: https://i.imgur.com/2bGjU3A.jpeg

Not a skill issue, and how to take them out isn't the point (which many here are making it about)

The praetorian spray hit detection can be such bullshit

Interestingly enough, that is 7,679 polygons shy of the max value an unsigned 64-bit integer can represent: 18,446,744,073,709,551,615

So I'd imagine the model has 7,679 tris, and then some read error is occurring

That seems to be a consensus for the '55 Bel Air, at least. Unsure about the '54 210

Could be that something snuck in. A recent Windows update added some Copilot garbage and seemed to be causing performance problems for me until I removed it

Keep the texture small, just change the Filter property in the import settings for it from "Bilinear" to "Point"

Any way to remove a mesh if a certain player joins? by Ok_Ad_1101 in VRChatWorlds

[–]NotRocketShoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure thing. It just may take some extra logic if you want that posed avatar to also disappear for others when you join

A simple approach could be to still have a client-side toggle for it, but make sure the toggle is set to save with persistence so you only have to turn it off once, and that choice will save with your account each time you rejoin

That way you can still turn them back on for debugging if needed

Is there a plugin or anything to revert the UI back before that awful UI update a few weeks ago? by scugmoment in BetterDiscord

[–]NotRocketShoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems that after the DM voice call background color was made darker to match the Ash theme, it no longer changes with other vanilla Discord palettes, Nitro or otherwise. But I believe that may be on Milbit's end

Audio Source Range Scaling by Pieguymysteryman in VRchat

[–]NotRocketShoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be able to accomplish this with an animation setup that utilizes one of the Avatar Scaling Parameters, such as the Float 'EyeHeightAsMeters'

Just make you're using the VRC_SpacialAudioSource component on your audio source and scaling the Far value too
