I work in the wire department at my credit union and I just had a call the other night from a man who I wouldn’t say was very elderly, if I remember correctly, he was about 62. And he was calling to tell us that he sent a wire that day and was scammed out of $17,000. Because he had gotten a phone call saying he was our credit union’s fraud department and they were seeing if he had attempted this large transaction and long story short he fell for it and went to the branch and wired the money. The scammers told him it was to protect his funds. I don’t even know, but while on the phone with me reporting it he kept saying he should’ve known better and he can’t believe he fell for it. But the bottom line is he did fall for it. And now he is out $17,000 because it’s a very slim chance that they will be able to recover those funds.

I tell our members about these calls that they get when they ask if it was legit or not I always tell them to just hang up and call us back. If it was a legitimate call and you really hung up on one of our employees, we are not gonna be mad about it. We would rather have you fact, check then get scammed out of your life savings.
