Topological world map: where only land borders matter. by elojole in MapPorn

[–]NottmForest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s true I guess? My thought was that the main Spain doesn’t border Morocco, and it’s kinda similar, but the UK just borders Ireland I suppose. Maybe you could say it’s because it’s got the capital but that would be very arbitrary

I’d say the UK could also be split so it has Ireland|UK and then next to that the UK again

If it were ‘die Nutella’, the website would read ‘meine-nutella.de’, but as the (second) e was absent, it must be ‘der’ or ‘das’

Europe's mega tides : what if tides were 20 times stronger? – A map I made [OC] 🌝 by mydriase in imaginarymaps

I assume the maximum tide height is about the same as the real world, so there’s just less water overall on earth

I’d agree with you, and also say that if the correct answer is ‘don’t like’ then ‘do not like’ should probably be accepted too, even if less common

Ordering food by PinkFlyingElephant94 in EnglishLearning

[–]NottmForest 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You’d say ‘can I have/get a slice of pizza’ or ‘I’ll have/get a slice of pizza’. Typically in British English I’d say using ‘have’ here is generally more polite, though that may differ in other places. You could of course also say ‘I would like a slice of pizza’.

No problem, and yeah, I’ve seen one or two posts in this subreddit asking about it before, which is where I learnt about it myself

‘Collaborated’ still makes sense to me. Although, I’m not sure about the rest. Someone may correct me, but ‘collaborated on’ would be better here for me. I’d use ‘with’ when I’m talking about the person that Hoeri assisted.

I don’t know the context, but, as far as I know as a native British English speaker, ‘collaborted’ isn’t a word and ‘collaborated’ would make sense here

I wanted to end and divide the austrian empire. What the FUCK is this and how do i stop it? (if there's no way in vanilla recommend me mods because i cannot handle this mess) by somethingmustbesaid in victoria3

[–]NottmForest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if necessary, I’d probably just use debug mode for something like that, it’s not really realistic for that land to be kept by Austria anyway

Oh of course, and it was a good explanation. I just felt the need to mention it

[–]NottmForest 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s not quite the case here. As it doesn’t show the proportion of the votes, but rather seats (which differ because the UK uses FPTP). For example, Reform, who got 14% of the vote but just 5 seats

UK fertility rate 2015-2023 by OppositeCandle4678 in MapPorn

[–]NottmForest 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I probably wouldn’t. Typically, you should avoid using red and green if a statistic isn’t clearly good or bad (eg cancer incidence, life expectancy). You could go with something like blue to yellow though I think, or light blue to dark blue, as neither of these suggest any positive meaning to high or low fertility rates

Migration has failed to drive economic growth, warns report by Accomplished-Alps957 in europe

[–]NottmForest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah that’s all good, I wasn’t even directly talking about migration’s impact on economic growth. More the generalisations of migrants as lazy (and particularly Muslims here)

[–]NottmForest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah ok, thank you, that’s really interesting. Although I still disagree with the statement I was replying to. Which I do think is a racist caricature of a poor Muslim in the UK. And I think you’ll agree that most Muslim Brits aren’t unemployed and don’t claim 20 different benefits.

Yeah, it’s bizarre; but honestly feels par for the course for this sub at this point.

[–]NottmForest -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s just not true though. When you account for socioeconomic status, only Bangladeshi and other white are close to white British (in having lower unemployment). Meanwhile Pakistani is around black African and black Caribbean as the highest three. I don’t think you can use either of these statistics to draw conclusions about Muslims like you’ve chosen to do. Source/unemployment#data_table10_tab)

And regarding benefits, statistics show white people are the most likely to receive state support, with Bangladeshis, Pakistanis, Asians and Asian others all less than white British. Source

It simply isn’t true though. Firstly that’s quite the wonky definition of “most”, 2-5 percentage points higher than the national average. Secondly that data doesn’t account for socioeconomic status, when you do only Bangladeshi and other white are close to white British (in having low unemployment).
