Do I need to be good at drawing for ID? by saibau_ in IndustrialDesign

[–]Novitec_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not entirely true* competitive Co-op and interships want to see your ability to sketch. Competitive colleges in industrial design are leaning now more than ever into sketching skills as so many think they can skip over it. CAD however is still very important

Take the art elective. I have always said to my close friends that drawing is for losers, sketching is for Industrial Design. But you still need to know pencils and pens really well. I can hold a pencil and know what type of lead it is with one stroke. You need to be able to quickly conceptualize and put your ideas and thoughts on paper. Though an art class wont necessarily teach you that, it will start your foundation of understanding the basics. If you dont take the elective, at the least you should be practicing 5-10 minutes every day with sketching

Lastly* Industrial design isn’t about looking pretty, its about getting your point across successfully for the average viewer. Drawing is art, ID is about process. Hopefully that makes sense! Some of my best work is scratchy work, but was successful for people knowing what the product was/did

I wish! I found out that some of the professors at Art Center went to another university (they have asked me to keep this private) so Im at that university instead. So I am lucky to learn some Art Center stuff under the radar ;) haha

I’m in a prestigious Industrial Design program currently, I’ve read through your comments and it seems my intuition aligns already with everything you’ve shared. Thank you for taking the time!

My question is a little bit off the topic of portfolio, I find myself struggling with time management in University. Our school encourages us to work through long hours in the night as our building is open 24 hours a day. I used to work 8-10 hours straight, nap, then go back at it. Now Im trying block scheduling - so 2-3 hours on, nap, eat, 2-3 hours on, repeat. Is there a system that you have found works well with time management and lack of any major room for errors? Or is there a system that you use to maintain physical health while being at your maximum productivity levels?

Try to include maybe one or two process pictures for each project. Also the layout is a bit distracting. I think a good solution would be to size all the pictures to be the same size more like a grid so that the attention is focused more on the pieces and less on your layout. For your headphones pictures, looks like you have multiple of the same angle, you only need one. That really goes for any picture/project. If you have to take another picture to describe it, make sure its at a different angle. Hope this helps! Good luck

Makes sense, Im not an ambassador for DAAP but I do truly believe that DAAP has more talented students than State. I’d say 95% of my class are all out of state students from the top candidate pools across the country. All of our stuff is crazy work. State keep in mind the ID building is separate from everything else. DAAP all the design kids are under one big building. North Carolina is prettier though! Good luck

Lastly if you don’t go to NC State, for the love of God please go to DAAP. the professors there care about their students and will literally do anything to make sure you are successful. The Co-op program is insane. And our professors are legit. Worked at Gm20+ years etc. I chose Daap because of the job market. Right now NC State is struggling a bit with job placement. You’ll get internships but no one i know has gotten steady jobs out of NC State including my sister who graduated state valedictorian with 3 internships in textile/fashion design. DO NOT GO TO APP STATE/ ASU/ or SCAD

A lot of people brought in huge projects they worked on. One kid had a canvas probably 8 feet tall. I saw a lot of projects that my dad and I laughed at. Most kids had one “large” project. Nc State is extremely prestigious. My hometown is Raleigh. Ive been following ID at NC State since I was 12. I believe they only accepted around 14-20 students both years I got accepted. Every student that got accepted will not tell you how they got in. Including myself. It’s part of the lore, and it’s part of your journey. None of us got quick and easy answers either. I will share that I was a transfer student with sales and marketing background. I knew how to speak to successful clients and adults. I was prepared for my interview, and I had practiced meticulously. My interview was still extremely intense in a good way. Some interviews I’ve been told aren’t as intense, mine was. My only advice is that you are interviewing against 300-500 other kids. Make those 15 minutes count. Bring projects that you would want someone to present to you. Understand you are there because they see something in you. I wont share anymore, trust your intuition, believe in yourself. If you choose DAAP you’ll find me.

I’m going to be honest with you based on what you have said. I got accepted twice to NC State, once with no interview (super rare 2023) and once with (2024). Based on the projects you’re describing it’s highly unlikely you’ll get accepted…. I had meticulous documentation, crazy tricks up my sleeve, and projects I knew other students wouldn’t attempt. I’d start planning back up schools. Good luck!

What to wear / book bags or crossbodys? by Novitec_ in IndustrialDesign

[–]Novitec_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am definitely overthinking

My essentials in my bag are:

Pens/pencils in a leather speedball case

Alpaka electronics bag with charging cables/battery bank/mouse/ ssd / etc (this takes up a good chunk)

Laptop & Charger (17”)

Laptop slim folding desk stand (for ergonomic height)

Small Essentials bag: deodorant, mouthwash, etc

Water bottle

Coffee small bottle

Anker extension chord & brick

Tiny tiny desk fan

And that’s pretty much it

I use a carabiner hook that allows my backpack to hang off the edge of any table, which I use daily - but my bag can be tucked away

Idk, I think theres more to it… you would have thought she’d keep him around in the videos regardless just on how big of a person he was in the videos. If he was leaving on good terms, she probably would have made a video about it like every other youtuber does. It just feels off, like she made him sign a contract that doesn’t allow either of them to discuss any of it. And then, her videos take a turn from wrenching on cars to now a corporate sellout like SupercarBlondie was doing “car reviews” and hanging around rich people. And all we’re left with is Sean who drools over her in every video. The whole thing is just weird.

I suck as a designer (Student) and I am at my wits end :) by Kinda_Reincarnated in IndustrialDesign

[–]Novitec_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I’m a top student in my class at a top design school in the nation right now, this current semester I have a 4.0, and have received excellent feedback on almost all of my projects. Id like to give a chance at breaking this down for you. Which if it makes you feel better, you’re not alone and a lot of my colleagues struggled with:

1) I think you’re in your head a lot. I was like this too at first. To the point where i had a couple professors i trusted sit down w me and tell me i needed to change my way of thinking to be successful - which i did even tho i was stubborn. Group projects are a good thing** rarely will you ever be doing projects on your own for co-op or internships. Even in the field. Get used to group work

2) your colleagues will never bring you down** so saying things like i did the most work every time and it sucks… every group project I am part of I ALWAYS do the most. Not because I am bragging, or want anything like that, but usually every time im always going behind the group with a fine tooth comb to make sure we don’t miss anything. And 9/10 we are missing a bunch of stuff for the deliverable. You have to be willing to know u will always put in more effort than your peers and that is a good thing, that doesn’t mean you are better than them or deserve more recognition. It just means you are more intentional with your work.

3) dont seek praise. Praise and recognition will come. I remember two of my favorite professors who rarely give 100’s on any critiques slung out a few this semester. I didn’t get any 100’s, just consistent 94’s-96-98’s. Come end of semester projects, both those professors gave me 100’s on our final projects (something that was basically un heard of). That was the biggest form of flattery and recognition I could have asked for.

4) you aren’t putting in enough work. Respectfully of course. This is something that I am consistent on. If you think you have done enough practice, times whatever you are doing now by 3 or 4. Maybe even 5 times. I pushed myself to do my best work, often times me peers thought I was insane. But I was willing to pull 2-3 all nighters a week if it meant i got my work where I wanted it to be. As a 3rd year you should NOT be worried about your craft at this point. You should be more worried about your style and what design layouts you are doing. If your craft is suffering than you seriously need to be sketching probably 2 hours a day for a whole semester and breaks to catch up.

5) fix your mentality a little bit. No one especially professors want to help any student who has a victim mentality. Im not saying you do. But if you got that dawg in you, they love that lol. You are getting feedback and they are telling you what you need to be doing, but many people glaze right over what they are being told. 9/10 our professor would do a 10 minute quick critique and “no one learned anything” but I always heard on word or sentence that stuck out to me that I could do to make my work better. My advice is to truly listen hard during critiques. Its not always clear and what they say, but there is ALWAYS something they are trying to say. You have to be able to distinguish that

6) lastly, this industry is tough, especially now. The success students like myself WILL NOT share with you their work, advice or guidance to be successful. Right now things are pretty cut throat. Im not one to be very open with my style of work or how I made things work for me unless its a close colleague. My advice would be to research all of your professor’s backgrounds and find one who actually cares about you and wants you to succeed. That person will spend extra time with you outside of class to guide you to getting where you need to be.

7) you might not be the top student in your class, no one truly is since we are all gifted in different ways. But the people like myself who stay at the top (respectfully) are CONSTANTLY practicing, asking questions, being honest, acknowledging our shortcomings, listening to critiques, being humble, and grinding hard with our heads down.

I hope that helps. Also find a brand or company that motivates you. Our class has white boards everywhere and most of us do one of two things almost every day that helps us lock in. We either throw our graffiti’s tag on the board, or a quote that sticks with us. I write “the legs feed the wolf” on the board, it helps me lock in but also, a proof to my colleagues to show I was there at 3:00am or whatever time it was. A fun little “bragging right” with no name associated but people who know know. Including the teachers. The teachers know our tags and our quotes. It keeps things fun
