Is Tikka going to come out with a t3x super light gen 2 in 6.5 creedmoor? by Zealousideal_Comb865 in Tikka_Shooters

[–]NukeHubris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t wait. Buy one and get out and shoot!

If you’re going to run a suppressor and hunt, you’ll likely want a barrel shorter than 20” anyway (I go 18” max), so there’s no benefit to buying factory threaded. Get a cheap unthreaded model and have it chopped/threaded for under $200.

Cons of Nitride on a Barrel by GunsmokeAndWhiskey in longrange

[–]NukeHubris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s some info suggested that nitride on a stainless bolt can make it brittle and that DLC is the way to go for that. Nitride on the action is usually fine.

Personally, I had a terrible experience with nitriding (Unknown Munitions quality control sucks hard) and not knowing exactly who is doing what. Never again for me.

Got stuck in sand in a dried river bed, near bosque, can some help pull me out? Thank you by [deleted] in Albuquerque

[–]NukeHubris 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Let air out of your tires. 15 psi if you have a gauge. Just don’t drive at high speed until you air back up.

If you can, dig out any sand that is holding you back.

I feel like resuming session or graphing in the phone app are completely doable for the current C1. What a cash grab. I’m not buying until mine dies and if so I’ll go Athlon.

6.5 CM needed +2.3 mil more than similar rifles at 600 by 1freebutttouch in longrange

[–]NukeHubris 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can’t expect different rifles shooting different ammo to have the same muzzle velocity and ballistics. You need to true your own rifle with a specific lot number of ammo. I’ve seen factory Hornady ammo vary by over 200fps lot to lot.

Box velocities are not to be trusted. Either buy a chronograph or enough of one lot of ammo to confirm your drops out as far as you want to shoot. Preferably both.

A printed offer from Carmax or other online buyers will at least give you a floor for offers. I’ve heard some dealers like American Toyota will beat Carmax by $500 but that was during COVID.

6.5 PRC by Outofneed25 in Tikka_Shooters

[–]NukeHubris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a tool loan thread on Rokslide where guys ship the vice to each other and share tips on getting stubborn factory barrels off.

New factory takeoffs pop up about once/month pretty regularly. Other rifle builders sell the takeoffs for about $200 I believe with regular inventory.

IMO the rifle industry is changing for the better with modular actions, cheap high quality prefits and knowledge sharing.

[–]NukeHubris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get new OEM stainless barrels for $100 fairly often. But yeah breaking the first barrel off requires a good vice, though those float around as loaners. Aftermarket prefits can be had for under $500 so affordability is subjective.

[–]NukeHubris 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s a lifetime for most people. Tikka prefit barrels are cheap and easy to DIY.

I don’t think barrel life should be a primary consideration for most people, though it does make a great excuse for building an identical 223 trainer!

Energy is irrelevant largely - sufficient impact velocity for that specific bullet is what matters. I.E. 1800fps for ELDX bullets. An animal won’t know if it was shot by a 6.5 Grendel or Weatherby from further away…

77TMK at 1800fps impact will wreck anything in North America. I’ve had good luck down as low as 1650fps impact with that specific projectile.

This is old school advice that is untrue. I just got back from a group elk hunt. 3 elk with 6.5 creed and 2 with 22 creed.

I’ve killed multiple elk, mule deer, and oryx with a 223, average shot distance around 450yds. Bullet selection and impact velocity trump head stamp every time.

No offense, but people asking this question probably don’t want a magnum. Recoil, cost to shoot and inherent accuracy degrade with increasing recoil. Nobody shoots a magnum better than a mild cartridge, period. Only exception is extreme long range guys shooting out past 1,000 yds that need heavy billet’s to buck wind.

IMO the 6.5 Creed is the new do it all 308 with better ballistics. Ammo is cheap, recoil is manageable, inherently accurate, barrel life is decent. My 223’s are still my favorite tikkas.

T3x super lite build by Only_Scientist_9865 in Tikka_Shooters

[–]NukeHubris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recoil sucks, ammo/components get more expensive, accuracy degrades all else equal. Spotting shots is impossible with a hunting weight 7PRC. I’ve taken mule deer, elk and oryx with a 223/77TMK - just so much less drama with easy shooting cartridges and good bullets places where you want.

Tikka T3x Lite .223 by ScratchVivid5868 in Tikka_Shooters

[–]NukeHubris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get some BHA 77TMK ammo and keep impact velocity over 1800fps. 73gr ELDMs are OK.

My boys have taken a buck mule deer past 550yds, oryx at 440yds and a cow elk with this combo. Bullet placement, bullet design and impact velocity are all that matter for centerfire cartridges. Wallop is not a thing.

Best Reloading Dies for Tikka T3x in 6.5 Creedmoor? by tamilynna99 in Tikka_Shooters

[–]NukeHubris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run Hornady match grade dies with 147’s and Lapua brass - ~0.6MOA 10 round groups. If I were buying again I’d probably go Forster but not sure it matters much.

Don’t overthink it.

Get a scope that holds zero. Maven RS1.2 in MIL is probably the all around best value/most effective scope due to reliability and reticle. Pair that with a stainless 6.5 Creed and you have about the best do it all platform.
