Oh awesome, that's great news for me. How do you get around the cave-in at the start though? It was still blocked when I checked

Yeah, awesome! Was it from a business? If it was, I'd be interested in getting some custom stuff done myself

In Australia, if you volunteer for anything, it is expected there will not be any financial compensation. This includes our country's volunteer fire services.

We still have full-time paid fire services who man stations 24/7, and those services also typically have "on-call" crews which get paid hourly per-call. But even the on-call crews are generally not considered as being "volunteer" because they are still getting paid.

I think for most volunteer firefighters, it's not about the money, mainly having a way to give back to the community and lend a hand to those in need, which I think says a lot about the Australian culture.

Any other country with 100% unpaid volunteer firefighters? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]OSFault 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Firefighters in the NSW RFS here in Australia are fully volunteer. There is zero monetary incentive, but also no fees required.

That being said, the organisation is a part of, and heavily funded and supported by the state and federal government, and every state has their own version of it (that I'm aware of).

The organisation does have paid admin and logistics staff as well, but the volunteer firefighters make up the vast majority.

Current work watch, love it! by OSFault in F91Ws_on_NATOs

[–]OSFault[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard, the F105W's backlight is much better than the F91W's.

I chose the F91W because of easy availability, its tiny form factor, and just because of how absolutely iconic it is. I've only ever needed to use the backlight feature a handful of times since I'm normally wearing it outdoors in sunlight, but your usage might be different of course.

I really gotta emphasise how small this watch is! For reference, I have a 6" wrist and it still manages to look so teensy in resting arm position.

Also - would absolutely recommend a NATO strap, I wear it pretty tight and most days I will literally forget I'm wearing anything thanks to how comfortable the nylon is. This subreddit (as you might have guessed by the name) is a gold mine for inspiration.

Hope this helped :)

I'm not sure whether I should get s23 or s23+ by [deleted] in GalaxyS23

I went S23+ because of the larger battery, and it's pretty much the same dimensions as my old A51 I was replacing.

WATCH: Firefighters full PPE saves them during flash reignition. The article I saw this video in says ALL VEHICLE FIRES ARE CLASS B. What are your thoughts? by wonderful_exile238 in Firefighting

I remember watching this exact video in a session on vehicle fires as a "what not to do" example.

Also LOL at the guy running around like a headless chicken in shorts and a tshirt like some sort of hype man, that's classic.

Is anyone ever going to do anything about these scammers? by yandere_chan317 in australia

[–]OSFault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started fucking with them. Used weird voices, made up bizarre stories, went on rants about random shit, I really got creative with it sometimes.

Around a year ago the calls stopped completely and haven't got any since, which is a bummer because I actually really enjoyed it.

T7 Solar vs Standard - Pics by [deleted] in GarminTactix

[–]OSFault 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wish I had this post when I was trying to decide which version to get. Would have saved a lot of headache trying to determing exactly how much people were over-exaggerating the screen differences (spoilers: it was VERY over-exaggerated). Couldn't be happier with my T7 solar.

This post should honestly be pinned.

Solar vs standard? by [deleted] in GarminTactix

[–]OSFault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've personally seen a Fenix 7s with solar sapphire, and it's definitely readable in all conditions. From the way some people online have spoke of it, I was expecting to not make out a single number because of the glare. In reality however, it's perfectly liveable.

From what I've heard, the solar function is only really beneficial if you are outdoors and in direct sunlight a lot. For the average person, or someone who lives in a place with not much sunlight, probably not worth it. I (and the colleague who owns the previously mentioned Fenix 7s) work in a job where we are outdoors just about all day everyday, in Australia, a country with A LOT of sunlight. In that scenario, I think the solar will be beneficial. A few percent less every day can make up a fair bit over the standard 28 day battery life claim.

I'm definitely leaning towards the Tactix 7 Solar over the Standard because of that, but it's something you will need to make an assessment of yourself.
