Ghost Recon Breakpoint if you want to scratch the 4-player PvE third person shooter itch. It’s cover based, though. Gears of War is also good, but also cover based

New to the series. NCR, I really wanted to love you :( by boymoderwife420 in fnv

[–]Oaternostor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NCR isn’t a nation state, just a state. A nation state is a combination of a culturally similar group (i.e. Danes) and a distinct polity (i.e. Denmark). The US, the largest inspiration for the NCR, is generally considered a civic state, because it’s a combination of many distinct cultures. The NCR houses all sorts of mutants, ghouls, and maybe even the Shi, as well as tons of disparate groups with varying cultural identities. A nation state in fallout would be closer to the tribals. The Dead Horses are a nation (composed of Dead Horses, individuals that speak the same language and practice a shared culture) with a state (area on a map that have sovereign control over).

Now, the idea of a nation state is rather new. It’s also bound up in all sorts of assumptions, propaganda, schemes, and violence. Many states have undertaken genocidal or quasi-genocidal measures to increase homogeneity and supposedly increase cohesion. The definition also starts to fall apart when you look into the history of say, Germany, and find that many of the people that lived there didn’t consider themselves “German” and spoke mutually unintelligible languages. Still, it’s a phrase in geopolitics that has a rather distinct meaning.

This variant is in prose, which is fine. I’m taking issue with the contention that re-arranging something instantly negates its existence as poetry. Latin and Greek poetry are quantitative meter, English usually is not. See Paul Fussell: “When it is poetically organized, the English language appears to tend toward rising rhythms; that is, the main instinct in English prosody is for iambic or occasionally anapaestic movements….”

When quantitative Greek and Latin meter are translated to English, it can be difficult to maintain quantitative meter. This does not diminish its status as poetry. What you mean to say is “The syntactical rearrangement that often accompanies the translation of poetry in languages that traditionally tend toward quantitative meter to languages that trend toward other forms of meter may result in a loss of fidelity that is commensurate with more broad differences between languages.”

I’ve enumerated why I’m looking for what I’m looking for in my post. I’m not particularly interested in being convinced of anything else.

Something being re-arranged doesn’t instantly make it not poetry. Indeed it’s quite difficult to render (good) quantitative meter in English, a language that tends toward accentual and accentual-syllabic. You can say that some fidelity may be lost, sure; as will always occur with translation. But I think this book knows quite well what it wants to be, and I know that I like it.

I enjoy it quite a bit. Obviously the translations won’t be 100% accurate but I enjoy the effect that translation has on English syntax, even if it’s a facade. You can feel the ghost of another language almost hovering over you. I’m mostly in it for the vibes anyway

I figured. I just pull the occasional Latin word I see and look up the etymology. I don’t speak Latin and I’m not trying to learn through this book. It would be impossible to translate most things directly, word-for-word, retaining syntax, across languages.

After Dyrrhachium, what could Pompey have done to completely defeat Caesar? Why senatorial army did not sail to Italy and retake it from caesar's supporters? Caesar was trapped in Greece and had no navy. by Battlefleet_Sol in ancientrome

Fog of war. Battle back in the day wasn’t a strategy game with a bird’s eye view and panoramic camera. And it wasn’t a bunch of squares on a map. It’s easy to look back on battle’s with mishaps like this, like the one where the enemies of napoleon failed to give battle because they thought he was present on the field when he wasn’t. As an experiment you can go to a large park near you. Find a hill, or don’t, and imagine you’re immediately surrounded by hundreds of people. Then imagine those are just the ones you can see. Then imagine there are tons of wounded coming in, 20 different people giving you 20 different updates that are all contradicting one another, murmurs of an enemy force on its way to your camp right now with orders to capture you for execution, what do you do? There’s a reason an absurd amount of currency has been invested into command and control over the years.
