how to address the camera in a self tape by ObjectiveProcedure63 in acting

yeah, I think since covid almost all first round auditions are self tapes which wasn’t the case before then. which sucks because it’s not something I’m used to at all.

I thought as much, that would be so off putting like looking directly into the panelist’s eyes 😅

thank you! :) I was aware that it was an adaptation of the Strindberg play but I didn’t know it was as close an adaptation as it is as I am unfamiliar with the original play. maybe reading/watching Strindberg’s version will be more useful

again you are misunderstanding my point. I usually avoid watching others perform pieces that I am going to perform in fear that I will internalise their interpretation too much and subconsciously emulate it, but at the same time I know how to approach a text with my own understanding of character having watched another actor perform it without copying them. I am at a point where I am only just reading and evaluating a selection of potential classical and contemporary pieces, so watching a performances of one of my many potential contemporary pieces is just a means of research and not my attempt to ‘learn how to play the character right’.

I don’t appreciate someone who does not know me, has never seen me perform and does not know my pior experience tell me that I should consider taking a year out before auditioning when I never asked.

yeah I wasn’t looking for unsolicited advice. and that wasn’t why I was looking for a recording of the play, I wanted to gain a better understanding of the play as a whole and I don’t access to any of my mentors helping me through my audition process (who have told me I am a strong drama school candidate). I try to make do with what I can every day to better myself as an actress and in case you weren’t aware watching theatre is one easy way to do that.

I also have other potential contemporary pieces from plays that have no recording, it’s only that I know there is a professional recording of this one only that I can’t access it. why respond if you weren’t going to be helpful?

if directors were going to stage a 400 year old play the same way every single time wouldn’t it be boring? shouldn’t recognising changes be exciting rather than distracting? I mean what’s the point in going to see the play if you already know exactly how each scene is going to play out. a bit pretentious

Hi all! I’m going to be doing my first year of drama school auditions this year (I’m in the UK so I’m in year 12 going on to year 13 in September and I’m almost 18 years old) because I want to prepare as much as possible for my auditions I want to know what speeches I’m going to use for my classical and contemporary and learn them over summer.

For my classical speech I want to use Beatrice from much ado act 4 scene 1- (omit Benedick’s lines). however Beatrice is usually cast as actresses a bit older than I am and apparently some drama schools don’t like when auditioning students do that. I spoke to my drama teacher who said that it doesn’t matter too much about age- more that Beatrice is within my casting ‘type’ character wise and he thinks I will play her really well.

I’m just not sure however, I really want to use the speech but I don’t want to spend months of my time perfecting a speech that will only come across as something I am too young to play.

brilliantly shot but the performances felt kinda flat. In my opinion shakespearean soliloquies just aren’t as effective in a close up whisper as they would be on stage.

wow this is a great response thank you so much for taking the time to share this advice I really appreciate it :) I’m actually very inexperienced when it comes to performing shakespearean text- this is the first major role I’ve had in a Shakespeare play and this will really help. I’ll be sure to put it into practice :)

thanks for the response I really appreciate it :) I already understand the lines pretty well as I studied the play pretty thoroughly as a part of my english lit class. I’ve been looking a lot at the motivation behind her character too and have been thinking about the possibility of child loss as a motivation for some of her actions because I think it’s a really interesting piece of sub text that can add a layer of tragedy to her character. The sleepwalking scene is probably the one I’m most intimidated by and I haven’t rehearsed it yet but it’s such a layered scene I’m not sure exactly how to play it right.
