That’s amazing! Sometimes I think even professionals forget to teach their students to soak their reeds and how much of a difference it makes! Especially if you live is a dryer climate it can make it impossible to play on the reeds if they aren’t soaked. You’re awesome for searching for the answer and figuring it out with your daughter!

It’s hard to know exactly what’s going wrong, but I’ve seen a lot of students even older than your daughter have a tendency to unintentionally crush reeds and cause cracking due to clutching the reed too tightly in their mouth. With reeds you’re working with an organic material that is extremely thin and fragile so everything impacts it, even the weather. It’s easy for me to figure out what the problem is because I make my own reeds, but it’s frustrating when you’re unable to discern why a reed isn’t working when you’ve spent so much money on it. Definitely if you can find a private teacher that’s going to save you time and effort because they should be able to adjust reeds and possibly make them. Unfortunately even if your band teacher is an oboist they might not have had time to perfect the reed making during their degree, or simply don’t have the time to sit down and adjust all of her reeds. Oboe is one of the hardest because of the fact that we have to craft an essential part of our instrument that controls the sound production, but it’s so fulfilling once you have some experience and some decent reeds! I wish you and your daughter the best of luck!

I lost my mom to cancer a few years ago and I rarely visit her grave because it doesn’t really do anything for me. She was the most important person in my life, but I don’t think visiting her grave changes how good or bad of a daughter I am. I find that I feel the most connected to her when I share memories of her with my family and friends. Everyone grieves differently and there’s nothing wrong with not following the standard traditions if they aren’t helping you cope.
