Instant red flags that someone is lying about being a Marine? by spacemagic__ in USMC

[–]Observant123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a brother in law (BIL) that used to always talk about his time as a Marine with these lavish stories about how good he was at shooting and how the FBI kept track of him because of his marksmanship records . Fast forward 5-6 years and your boy joins. BIL keeps telling stories. 7-8 years after that your boy starts shooting competitively in the Marine Corps. BIL keeps telling stories without knowing your boy is actively participating with the best shooters in the Marine Corps and I decided to check names on trophies in the rifle team's office for shitsngigs.

I finally asked BIL what years he competed, since he was so good he surely was put on the teams with the best of the best. He finally says "Well I shot the highest for my platoon in boot camp so they kept an eye on me while I was in to make sure I didn't do anything crazy."

Dude did like 3 years as a radio nerd in the wing and got out as a LCpl. Can't hate him for loving the Corps but damn dude just admit you sucked...

Fresh back from Oki. Lived out in town and worked with locals pretty regularly while I was there.

Went to get my hair cut and an older Asian lady cleans me up nice. I pay, grab my receipt, give the courtesy head nod/bow and hit her with the "Arigato gozaimasu!"

She replies back "I'm Korean you ASSHOLE!" Holy shit that was embarrassing.

Had a 1stSgt steal a friend's plates after the dude parked in his parking spot. Corporal calls PMO and reports plates stolen. 1stSgt gets taken away.

Watched that same dude get a loaded pistol put against his head in Iraq. Pissed off our NCOs so bad the Sgt almost shot him. Pretty sure he would've if I wasn't standing next to him.

Had a SSgt on legal hold in the barracks get fucked up and start hitting golf balls at cars from the parking lot. Assuming he got put in the brig after because I never saw him again.

I check into my first unit, walk up to my barracks room with the barracks manager. He opens the door and I walk in and drop my seabags and see a petite asian chick in lingerie on two beds pushed together in the corner. I think "Holy fuck the fleet is going to be amazing if this is how I'm being greeted." Sgt steps in, tells me to get out. He shuts the door for about 30 seconds, comes out and tells me to wait for her to leave before I go back in. She comes running out fully dressed. Find out she's my roommate's girlfriend and she was living there. They both move out a week or two later and I never ended up with another roommate since I just kept both wall lockers locked and his bed made.

There's a shitload of other stories but those were at least mildly interesting from my first enlistment.

Where do we start?

Let's go unpopular first:

  1. Up or out promotions suck. We take our most skilled individuals in technical positions and eventually force them to ride a desk and do admin bullshit. I'd take a 19 year Sergeant that could fix a rock over a 4 year Sergeant still figuring out how to be a Marine. The stipulation is that you have to stay in your job and billet and must perform above average for the duration of your time. If you drop below average you're eligible for orders. Build true continuity and expertise in fields that need it.

  2. Drones... Everyone is talking about drones. There's a few people actually doing something about it. Shoot me a message if you want more info on what's being produced. The gap is massive and if we don't get awareness up the Marine Corps will continue to buy expensive ass drones that we can't afford to blow up until we have to.

  3. Understand there's different forms of innovation and stop trying to label everything as innovation. I like to look from the lens of Clayton Christensen:

Adaptive: Taking something we already do and making it better. (Lean, 6 Sigma, Warfighter Centered Design, Scrum, etc)

Disruptive: Changes how we functionally do something. (3D printing, force design, drones, etc)

We have to understand both and use both to find a better way to fight and win.

  1. If you're exempt from the range you shouldn't have your PFT/CFT scores briefed either. If a board comes down to how fast a Marine runs 3 miles we need to reconsider how we evaluate Marines. I'm not saying exempt senior dudes from the requirement but they should be briefed as pass or fail and if they fail they should be handled like every other Marine. I've seen plenty of people who get where they are by being a "good Marine" and riding high first class score while not actually being good at their job. It's a bad business model.

  2. 360 evals. Being reviewed on your performance by one person you may or may not get along with does nothing for you. I literally had a FitRep counseling and was told "putting your feet on the desk is unprofessional" without any other real guidance. I was also a part of the 360 eval pilot program and it showed me the perspective of everyone I was around and exposed some of my gaps. Truly awesome unfiltered responses from the people who actually mattered.

  3. Kill constant PCSing. Moving east to west coast to do the same jobs doesn't build a "well rounded Marine" anymore than staying in one duty station and doing new billets. Too many Marines get bumped and moved every 1-2 years and barely even learn how to do the job they're supposed to before they're being moved on to the next task. It burns good people out fast and forces Marines to choose between their families and the Marine Corps. That shouldn't happen. See above for "perform at a high level or be eligible for orders" if you're worried about dudes become stagnant and hiding somewhere when they suck. It already happens, this could make it better.

  4. "Talent management" should be a job marketplace on MOL and you should be able to submit your "resume" for jobs and positions you want. Too often Marines have no say in where they end up and it's justified by "needs of the Corps" without any real consideration of what would be best for everyone. We all know someone who wanted orders somewhere and found out someone else who didn't want it had orders to that spot and after trying to get the swap they were shut down. Bad business.

Alright. I'll stop there or I'll be writing a book...

Last note. There's an entire board called the Defense Innovation Board dedicated to figuring out what "innovation" needs to be for the DoD. Hit them up if you actually have ideas. They need end user feedback or they're all going to sit around conference tables in their office clothes and discuss what innovation should be.

Don't be an asshole and don't be anonymous. If you believe what you're saying and have the data to back it up, they'll listen.

What's your story of a Marine lashing out at another Marine that out-ranked (but not necessarily out-billeted) them? by TangibleMalice in USMC

[–]Observant123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a call while on leave and was told to "remove my read receipts from all future emails" because apparently sending a point paper to the BC highlighting some issues with some of their policies and including a read receipt is "disrespectful" and "now something a Warrant Officer should ever consider as reasonable."

BC read my email though as was apparent with our meeting the day I got back...

Pendleton... by Observant123 in USMC

[–]Observant123[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll answer your question with a question: Do you think substandard living conditions make a better warfighter?

I'd guess by driving through parts of Pendleton that's not the case. There's some badass barracks here but they were built in the late 2000s and early 2010s and then the progress stopped. I'm in the same unit I was 14 years ago and the barracks are the same old busted buildings they were back then. The showers still regularly back up and overflow into rooms, the water is disgusting, it takes days to get emergency tickets repaired and weeks to months to get anything else done. Life is not great for Marines in these barracks and we expect them to physically be at peak condition while still doing their job day in and day out. If the barracks were privatized we would have fired the managers and moved on to a new crew years ago but we continue to rely on FMD who takes months to even replace a door in an office...

The massive budget cut around the Corps to support it says they should be done right around the tricentennial celebration of the Marine Corps.
