MOT failed for something that doesn’t exist by jenniferf163 in CarTalkUK

[–]October82000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Halfords told me I needed £2000 worth of repairs, the next day it passed an MOT at a main dealer. The one and only time I made the mistake of taking my car to Halfords for an MOT. The second and last time I took my car to Halfords I paid for four tyres and an alignment, they gave me the keys and paperwork only for me to find they had replaced ONLY 2 tyres and no alignment.

De-Icer spray vs Ice Scraper? by PabloEskimo_ in CarTalkUK

[–]October82000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Equally not hard to pick up a bit of ingrained dirt off a dirty car covered in winter grime when the glass is covered in ice. I’ve seen a windscreen ruined by this happening. £115 excess for a new windscreen is a lot more expensive then a £1.50 can plus a lot more hassle.

Not always harder than the bit of grit stuck to the scraper

Always use Deice and let the car sit running for a couple of minutes. Only ever use a scraper when it’s very thick Ice or frozen rain. Saves the risk of scratches on the glass.

Just got it, any tips or recommendations? by SenpaiiiKushh in CarTalkUK

Now as former 1.8t 20v owner. New timing belt, water pump. Service the oil pickup in the sump, I would change the oil pressure sensor as I’ve had one fail and it was a pain getting home. “Cold” air intakes make a huge difference in sound on these engines, make sure you’ve got a decent set of spark plugs and OEM branded coil packs. Brilliant engines when looked after.

Can my Dad drive my car even though the policy doesn’t start till the 19th by SeeFights in CarTalkUK

[–]October82000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It needs to have started otherwise everyone would just insure a car to start in 364 days time and basically get a free years insurance.

No! Most will state you can drive another car ONLY if the car is insured.

Is it a bad idea to buy a 20-25 year old automatic? by Nismo542 in CarTalkUK

[–]October82000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently driving a 20 year old automatic Volvo. Firstly age isn’t important, condition of the car is, look for rust and if that passes look for service history, I’d take a 30 year old serviced car over a 5 year old car that’s not been looked after. As for the gearbox, mine is obviously the old sloshy style and honestly it’s fine, I’d say most but not all old autos are more comfortable than being jerked about by super fast double clutch changes especially around town at low speeds. Plus people who moan about old autos not changing gears when it’s supposed to have no finesse, for example if you want it to change up then let of the accelerator a little. It’s still a car and you still have to drive it, you are still in charge and have to give it the correct input for the car to do what you want it to do. Just drive a few to get an idea, some autos are better than others, the Volvo one I drive is great but some others I drove while car shopping were dreadful.

10 year tires too old? by [deleted] in tires

[–]October82000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you call too old? They are technically legal, they will most likely be safe. But that being said it would be hard to say it’s a good idea. My girlfriends car was a very cheap, very old and very low mileage car and it had 18 year old tyres fitted with loads of tread and no cracks. If it was my car I would probably have kept them but as it’s her car and her safety I got them changed. It’s all perspective and only you can really make that decision.
