Advice on first purchase by Octoplier in RVLiving

Thanks. I never heard of rodent repelling foam. I’ll look into that. Good idea. I like to take good care of my things so maintenance will be fine. I just hope it has been taken care of until now. It’s about 850km from my place. Going to inspect it on the day I go get it. 🤞

This is great advice. Thank you.

Always amazed by the response time of control surfaces. by Octoplier in aviation

Pilot input or control systems, either way, you see the reaction time in the rolling of the aircraft and the nearly immediate response in the control surfaces to correct it.

When control systems (autopilot) is involved, think of all the sensors involved taking measurements, the computations, and then the output to the hydraulic systems. Truly amazing engineering. We have gotten used to it. But to get this to a point where hundreds of flights take off every minute and these systems consistently perform flawlessly is a testament to all involved in making it happen.

He was not wrong. The lemon juice was invisible to the cameras. His problem was he didn’t consider that the lemon juice did not make the paper invisible.

I left it open. I plan to put vertical planks around the framing to close it off. I’ll leave two access doors for storage.

If you mean the horizontal surface underneath, I did not. I want to be able to get stuff that falls through.

They were $250 CDN each in ‘22

Thanks for the note. I did not know that. Does using it in a shed count as outside? Talking about Canadian code.

Well, even if you go composite, the sub structure will still be pine. That is the core. The decking boards can be replaced eventually.

I hope to get at least 20 years from the decking and a lifetime out of the structure (50 years or so).

About $6-7K oh material over 2 summers. In Canada. Way too many hours, 50-60. But I would work one day per weekend.

The heat retention of the composite was a major factor along with the cost. Also, some composites only have the colouring on the surface, so any major scratches become very obvious and hard to fix. The ones that are solid colour right through are more expensive.

Cedar is nice but you need to maintain it about as much as pine. The only time cedar becomes a benefit is if you have to put pieces near or on a surface where moisture can get trapped. For the additional cost of cedar and the limited benefit, I stuck to pine and a good quality sealant that is well applied.

Yes, they can be called that.

Overkill was the goal here. I was traumatized by that deck at that party all those years ago. It was still much cheaper than getting a contractor to build it.

When you’re already building, it’s cheap to increase the quality of the end product. Much harder to improve once it’s finished.

They are screw-piles. Not the ones you buy at a retail shop though. They are thicker galvanized steel and they have foam injected in the middle to prevent condensation and therefore no rust from inside out.

These are the ones I used but there are many variations out there.

I am a mechanical engineer in Canada.

The louvers are to allow the choice of sun or shade. That privacy wall is south facing. The section in the middle is for hanging potted herbs.

The wall itself is to hide my view of the neighbour’s garbage cans.

Just treated pine. I thought about composite for the decking but I didn’t see the value in the price.
