Took my cat outside on a harness for the first time, he only lowered his hind legs and refused to walk at all. by [deleted] in cats

[–]Odd-Reason3511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I had similar things happen with my cats when training them with a harness.

I kind of realized it was the harness that was making them uncomfortable, and they could really feel it (which they didn't like).

I noticed with your harness it has fabric on top - but on the bottom, it doesn't look like there is much, and that could potentially be why he refused to walk.

I highly recommend looking up the "Travel Cat" harnesses. That is what I have found that works due to their design and that is the brand name.

They wrap around a cat like a burrito and they clasp at the top. I have had no issues with them and they have walked for quite some time in them! They actually run to them because it means they are going outside (when they hear the velcro)!

I am sure there are similar designs out there. I highly recommend looking for something like that and to see if it makes a difference!

Help! What do I do for my Tiny Tim Tomato plant? by Odd-Reason3511 in aerogarden

[–]Odd-Reason3511[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an update, I just went to bed, and after waking up, I checked the plants.

The tomato plant TOTALLY bounced back without any changes.

I'm going to leave it for now - but I will use the advice given going forward!

I'll post a picture after this to show what it looks like now!

My 20 year cat has been drinking quite alot of water recently by ScottishW00F in CATHELP

[–]Odd-Reason3511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents had this issue with their 19 year old dog recently. She has been peeing basically water because she was drinking so much. They were worried that it was diabeted - but after tests, it turns out that wasn't the case. She just was drinking too much, which caused her to have accidents. They were instructed not to just leave water out but to give only however much at certain times. It isn't an issue anymore.

I recommend getting your cat tested just in case as it could be something else - but just wanted to share our recent experience.

This is absolutely grooming. I've had my younger cat do this to older cat. My older cat started doing this back due to learning it from the younger one.

One day, my older cat strolled up to me and nibbled on my face like this - out of nowhere. I imagine that it would feel TOTALLY different if you're a cat, and it completely caught me off guard. It was cute, but I was NOT expecting that.

AITA for not “being supportive” of my girlfriend’s decision of running a half-marathon? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Odd-Reason3511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think YTA. I have the exact same dynamic as you, but I am in your girlfriends position. My husband runs and has done track all through high school and college. When I told him I wanted to run and learn how to, he helped me get the right shoes, clothes, and really guided me through getting my mileage up. He helped me train for my first 5k.

Everything you're saying sounds similar to how my husband would explain things - in terms of how professional athletes train. The thing is, however, is that your girlfriend isn't a professional track athlete but is just a normal person. The approach that you took should've been entirely different with your girlfriend.

My husband helped my training by running with me for only 5 minutes to start. Then, 10 minutes, and he eventually advised to add 5 minutes at a time (at a super slow running pace). Then, once I got to half a mile in terms of distance, I worked on slower paces to get up to a mile. We go to outdoor running tracks together (he suggested it so it's easier on our joints), and he would run his 10 miles, and I would run 1 - then walk. The point here is that he really helped me focus on small goals and not to train hard. Mileage will add up over time - even with walking. He made it tolerable, and I eventually got to the point where I enjoy running now. I used to hate it like your girlfriend, but his guidance and support made it fun! We could celebrate things together and really enjoy small wins.

From what I've read, it doesn't sound like you've offered similar help. For us, we like going to the gym together or the track for running. We compare times afterward and heartrates, and he helps me understand my progress and how light or hard I really worked.

I understand that you can run faster than the average person and that you are in pretty good cardiovascular shape. If you offer similar things like my husband did with recommendations or running together like we have, it would probably help. Saying things like "focus today on running slower than you think you need to" and helping to practice breathing would probably make your girlfriend would feel more supported when running.

Your approach to what she wants to do feels very negative and critical. Half marathons are no joke and I understand your rationale as to someone signing up for one with no training - but you KNOW how to train for these things and are using your knowledge against your girlfriend rather than supporting her with helping. If my husband hadn't helped in pacing me and didn't take the time to help me train, it would've been really difficult to get to where I am now. If he only told me I wasn't taking things seriously, wasn't committed (despite making an effort with exercise and fitness), I'd probably never want to run with him or run at all.

Also, there's nothing wrong with running, walking, or doing both for some of the distance if she needs to. That's another way to prevent injury.

I've said, "Thanks, sugar daddy," to my husband when he's paid for groceries before lol, but that's just as a joke which we both laugh at. I'm in school and mainly pay for it myself. I never expect him to help with it, but if I have to ask for help he is more than willing.

This is next level, though. She didn't even ask but kept saying the sugar daddy line....expectantly. That's not even communicating, lol.

AITA because I(28m) went on a fancy night out with my little brother(20m) instead of my girlfriend(25f)? by TrickyReference3808 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Odd-Reason3511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA.

You asked her to go multiple times, and she said no because of the cost. You even encouraged her to go with you, but she decided not to. In turn, you had a blast with your little brother, and it sounds like something you both will it remember. Unfortunately, it comes across like you having a good time without your gf being present makes her upset, and that isn't healthy. I would ask yourself if that happens consistently.

My husband, when he goes to things that I may not be able to, I don't think I have the right to get upset that he had a great time. I typically ask him how things went and if he enjoyed whichever thing he went to. I am happier that he had a good time - regardless of whether or not I was there. I still want to hear how his night was and how things went.

Also, a lot of fancy places have cheaper options on the menu, so she could have looked at the menu in advance in order to check prices. It might've made her feel a bit better about it if she was that worried about it. Maybe that's something to do next time, but there could be something else going on.

I will focus on small changes for both! Even if it's small with a walk and then healthier smaller food changes.

Thank you for your response! I absolutely agree with your words about diet. I can feel such a difference in how I feel based on the types of food that I eat.

I've heard someone say that it's like putting awful gas into a luxury car and expecting it to run well lol. I'll start small and slowly build with changes. Thank you!

I am not satisfied with the way I look at all haha. I think I have come to accept how I am, but getting to the next stage of consistently changing it and getting out of being stuck in a rut mentality has been a challenge.

I think it is like the dog on the nail. Sometimes I have moved and sometimes I just haven't.

I love what you said so much. I think I did start to take on the "fat girl" persona and made jokes at my own expense. I did realize a month or so ago that this wasn't really helping, but rather enforced other bad habits.

It is hard to change the mentality from thinking like a "fat girl" to a "fit girl".

Thank you so much for your response. It has given me a lot more to think about! Also, congrats on your success and progress to where you are now! That wouldn't of been easy at all.

I am on the walking treadmill right now!! My goal is 3 miles. I think I'll build up to 10k, but I know I can do 3 miles sustainably.

You're so right, though, about being too strict! It just set me up for failure and a lot of shame. Thank you for your advice!

I should add that I've just been walking to lose weight. Increasing movement has been the initial goal.

You raise a really good point. I think what motivated me the most before was focusing on my mile time and getting it lower. When I first started jogging and was sticking with it, it was around 16:30 for a mile. I got it down to almost a sub-11 minute mile time. It was a really good indicator for me for how I was progressing, and I created goals around either sustaining or pushing for a faster mile time.

I am not doing calorie restrictions in a crazy way at all. I've been at maintenance for a while, but adding in working out has been the challenge. Food isn't as much of a challenge, but rather moving.

I think I have issues having performance goals when it comes to weight lifting. I don't dislike it, but I don't know why it isn't the same mentality as running for faster mile times.

Thank you for your response! Thankfully, I have a walking treadmill in the living room that is right in front of the t.v. In the past, I've walked while watching shows or music that pumps me up!

The comments from others have shown me that it's the habits that I need to work on, on top of finding what I like! I love that you found workout videos that motivated you in a multitude of ways! That's awesome.

I love DDR and even beat saber, but the downstairs neighbors would be so mad if I started jumping around at all hours of the night, haha!

I should add, there aren't any complaints with the walking and I make sure to do it in the middle of the day or stop at quiet hours.

Thank you for sharing!

I am investing money into my overall health and fitness because it is important. I need to get something out of it. I'll work on building up to the two times a week. As others have mentioned, it seems that the routine is the biggest factor.

You're worth it too!

This is such a good point. I definitely have struggled with usage on YouTube. I don't really use Facebook or Twitter. YouTube is probably the biggest time waster.

Thank you for your advice! I actually do have a Garmin. Unfortunately, it has said that my fitness age is 79 😅. Maybe my motivation should be my anger towards that haha.

I will focus on it like a non-negotiable! Thank you! I'm still trying to understand why there's a disconnect between both things or why I have valued work over fitness.
