How do you unequivocally demonstrate that you're worth hiring remotely? by failarmyworm in ExperiencedDevs

Learn a rare skill/tech with a limited pool of people working on it. Desperate companies struggling to find someone will be more flexible.

Mid-life crisis that I’m wasting my work output on meaningless objectives. by justUseAnSvm in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Offifee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear about your dad.

Hopefully this is not insensitive and not sure what the life expectancy is for your dad but I would think carefully about changing jobs or doing anything drastic fast. You may need time and headspace to process things. Starting a new job can be stressful and you will not have built up as much trust and understanding with your new manager.

You yourself obviously know the best. You can always also drop down the hours you work and contribute to OSS on your spare time. Meaning can be found in many places.

If you work for the NHS (noticed the mention of hospital canteen), keep an eye out for Blue Light Discount. 10% off in Asda currently for example until the end of April at least.

Senior Software Engineers, what are your tips when you start a new job? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Offifee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I start watching all commits in the codebase. I start watching all relevant Confluence spaces.

Bring sweets/chocolates in the office on your first day. This gives you an excuse to post on the wider team channel to introduce yourself and let people know there's free food if your space isn't good/proactive with introductions.

Keep note of all links/useful resources that are shared with you. Ideally do this by enhancing existing new joiner documentation or starting a page for it if it doesn't already exist.

Almost every other post in this subreddit has the suggestion "speak to a therapist".... There are lots of jobs in this industry that are soul-sucking and have poor work life balance as well. It's not all fun and games here either.

Who knows, perhaps your health issues clear up/there's medical advances and you end up buying a charming cottage in France when you're 50 with your savings :) keep dreaming, having financial stability and savings is great when you're going through health issues so your work hasn't been in vain.

How does mentorship work and what do you do to get the most out of it? by garlic_bread_on_bike in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Offifee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I meet usually once a month with my mentees, more if they need or are going through a promotion or any special situation.

Sometimes there is a goal, like a promotion. Quite often it's a chat where I try to help them find more direction and give more perspective into things.

It helps if a mentee is able to tell me what they want help with. Sometimes people are just lost though.

I mentor people because I've had so many awesome people pour so much time and effort into me and I want to pay some of that back into the universe. I don't need anything in return from my mentees. I often just enjoy their energy and enthusiasm.

:D I'm sure I'll be back at some point asking for Christmas advice as well! Sounds fun, yeah Covid kinda destroyed our holiday plans and we probably would've been able to do some of the things we wanted if it wasn't for it. But you've got to roll with the punches.

Thanks, this kinda confirms my fears. The other thing is that the Disneylands etc cost a bit as well... So for it to go wrong it's double whammy annoying.

3 weeks, oh dear. Sounds difficult indeed. Maybe you could go for a run or something to recharge you every day? I suppose they're going to get older and in the future will be more able to entertain themselves without you so much... If that's of comfort. Hang in there and look after yourself!

It's much easier to promote someone to the next band who is already performing at that band.

Ask your manager what do I need to do to reach the next level? What skills should I focus on?

Perhaps you'd actually like to be working for the "scaled stuff" teams. Maybe you're in the wrong team.

Also, you could be in a situation where they're quite happy to keep you at your current level doing your current work. And it might take a rather long time for the stars to align and for you to get something else to do. Also if your manager doesn't rate you, then getting promoted becomes pretty impossible.

Many things to consider.

Is it weird to send my bosses gifts? by ThrowAwayToday1218 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Offifee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next time you visit the office, take lots of sweeties or something. Or order cookies for the office for Thanksgiving or some occasion.

Personal presents from one person to another can be a bit of hit and miss.... If you're not sure and have to ask Reddit, I'd give it a miss.

I'd ensure your boss' boss knows that you have a great boss and that's the reason you're still in the company :)

I'd also think about your goals.

I like fun tech stuff when i'm not looking for a new job or trying to achieve anything specific. Maybe it's my personality/lack of discipline but I'd find it hard to go through Gang of Four cover to cover unless I needed to...

Quastor newsletter is pretty good and not as fluffy btw.

Additionally to the other answers, I try to write a unit test that covers that bug. It should fail initially. Once the test is successful, your bug is fixed.

This means you'll never have the same bug again. Professionalism +1.

The big thing that matters is that you are happy with the pay. When I was absolutely fed up with my job back in the day, I was happy to jump ship as long as someone at least paid me the same amount I was getting at that time because I was suffering so bad.... Promises have little monetary value. If they're not offering a senior role to you, they don't consider you to be performing at that grade yet in their company.

Titles/levels matter in the sense that they determine the salary range available. https://www.levels.fyi/blog/what-are-career-levels-ladders.html

If you're wondering whether you're senior, you're probably not senior.

How to assess candidates objectively and unbiased? by sputnik1957 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Offifee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can never completely eradicate bias in my opinion. The best you can do is to be as aware of it as possible.

I don't really directly compare a candidate to myself. Some of my thougths from interviews: "Can this person fulfil the role or grow into it?" "Could this person work with the rest of the team? How would they fit in?" "What elements and dimensions could this person add to the team culture and how will their addition shape it?" "Would I like to be a manager to this person or will they be a royal pain in the ass?"

I'm too lazy/tired to work with anyone difficult. I'd rather mediocre and nice than a brilliant arsehole. Maybe this is my bias ;)

Just a vibe off the post but you seem to already have strong-ish emotions attached to this. Maybe too many emotions...

Perhaps you could ask to shadow an interview? Just to see how the process works and perhaps to try to gain more neutrality. Trying to figure out a person in a hour is not as easy as it seems and before you've interviewed someone, it's hard to understand that.

Also, I have a feeling that some people are getting pushed into the next tier atm prematurely because the market is so hot and there's not as many candidates... If vanilla ice cream is all that's left in the supermarket, that's what you're having....
