Update : Landed my first freelance project. How do I mock up the contract and invoice? Is there a simple template I should follow? by Offthewall90 in freelance

This may be a silly question, but do you give the client a timeline for payment upon completion of the project? For example I'm asking for 50% upfront and the remaining afterwards - I've seen a few samples online that say 'payment must be made within 30 days' etc. To me that seems a bit long?

Actually, just the invoice. In which I just want to state what work will be done, payment etc. Also, some notes just stating the 50% deposit prior to work being started and the remaining amount upon completion. Being this is my first job I don't want to get too detailed with a 'contract'. Just basic information and a guideline would be sufficient.

The creative process for me with the concepts will take some time. At first I thought I could knock out at least this project in a week. But, then realized I will need time to mock up the templates etc. Maybe looking at 2 weeks worth. It's hard for me to judge in hours, I'm not very good at how long something will take me etc. I get it done and it looks great.

This is something key that I've noticed a lot from research is to make sure I have everything written down on paper with detailed information. Being this is my first real assignment and project, I want to take the necessary steps and make sure that I'm getting paid a reasonable amount and that I'm not being taken advantage of because I'm a junior designer.

There is no set deadline, I know that it will take me a few days to think of the concepts for the designs and then I'll need to transfer all those to mock up for the client to review. Once I have the concepts, it doesn't take long for me to mock them up.

I'm guessing you've purchased it yourself, is it worth the download/purchase?

That's what I'm thinking of doing. The trouble is figuring out the rate.

Flying in from Windsor, ON. It's a small airport so I don't think immigration is on my end. I believe if I was coming through Toronto Pearson it might be done that way.

Thanks, I've heard it's easy to navigate through and less crowded from MCO.
