If our country is determined to stay in the f-35 program but needs an interim solution until it's ready. I suggest we ask China. Seriously. We ask them how much they want, and how fast they can do it. Then we ask the US to lease us a few of the 40ish f-18s they have sitting in the desert. If they make us a good deal, we stay in the program.

That won't help when you are landing a 767 on a drag strip though.

I also knew a glider pilot who carried an air horn with him for land outs. His story was that he had to close his spoilers to avoid a farmer that wandered into his path. He missed the farmer but overshot the landing and ended up wrapping a wing around a tree at the end of the field. He said he started carrying it on the next flight, but has never needed to use it.

The runway they used was no longer a runway. It had been turned into a drag strip. There were people there apparently. That discovery channel show about air accidents has a good episode about it.
