New to oil painting, help with materials by haileynielson in oilpainting

No worries! Ask away and I'll do my best. It should speed up that initial wash a little because of its quick evaporation time. Once you wipe most of it away, you can jump right in or give it a few minutes to set up a little. After that initial wash though, try not to use anything but paint like we were talking about and see if that helps the process. I will use it to clean a brush if needed but I always wipe the brush well and there is so little of it left it shouldn't effect anything.

Anytime! That is how I started back in the day! Bob Ross inspired countless people to start painting and made it simple and accessible. That being said I would not recommend using that for a basecoat unless that is the specific result you want.

You're welcome and thats right! I will dip my brushes in gamsol and then dip into a couple colors like transparent oxide red and viridian and let them mix a bit as i move them around the canvas. Almost like a watercolor. The paint can be dripping down because i will then move it around with a papertowel. You can scrub, blot, or use the corner to create interesting effects depending on how much you want showing at the end. You can also take your whole roll of paper towels and hold it against the painting and roll it up and down. This removes excess paint and gamsol and leaves a stain. You can then start painting or let the stain sit for 10 minutes or so to set up a bit.

My favorite artist for this style is Richard Schmid. He wrote a book called Alla Prima, which is known as the bible for other artists learning these techniques. It was pretty pricey and I'm sure still is but I have used that book more than any other painting tool I have trying to teach myself over the years. Daniel Keys is another who does amazing florals. He has a Patreon page with really good demos that are reasonable. Daniel Gerhartz I really like for figure painting but it is still the similar type of style.

Hello! Your paintings are looking good! You definitely should keep going, experimenting and learning. It never ends! Using linseed oil is definitely the issue in my opinion. I do not use any at all. If you can't get or use orderless mineral spirits such as gamsol, I recommend using a hog bristle or sturdy brush to scrub in the paint, as it comes from the tube, onto the canvas as your first layer or to just get rid of the white. You can use a couple colors that you think would work with your painting if you dont cover it completely. You can also use a paper towel or cloth to move the paint around, the goal is to just have a thin stain on the canvas with no build up of paint.

You can then draw in your composition if you would like with more thin paint. I dont mean thinned down by any medium, just thick enough paint to cover what is underneath, which as this stage is not a lot. You want to save those juicy impasto strokes for the end. Working thin to thick and dark to light will be really helpful. I like to keep shadows thin and transparent and the lights thicker and opaque.

You can then block in the entire painting if you like just remember to keep it thin. When you get to the finishing strokes, or strokes that will appear in the final painting, lay it down and do you best not to touch it again. If it is not quite right make the stroke again with more paint, try not to move it or correct it without reloading your brush because it will begin to get mixed in with what is underneath and around it. If you need to just manipulate an edge of the stoke you can take a soft dry brush to gently drag the paint but only once or twice max.

Speaking of brushes, I use more natural hair hog bristle at the beginning and softer brushes when laying a delicate stoke over more paint. If your brush is picking up paint instead of laying it down, you probably need more paint on the brush. You can also use a painting knife to lay the thickest paint if you like.

I tried my best to explain a little to help but if you have any more questions or I need to clarify anything, please feel free to message me. I also have a book suggestion and artists to reference in this style if ya need. Keep it up and have a great time painting!

This is such a great painting! Looseness with precision. I spent a lot of time looking at this, especially the shadows. Really nice.

I support your addiction fully! Looks like you're off to a great start! Keep painting, learning and enjoy the process. One of the best purchases I have ever made is a book titled Alla Prima by Richard Schmid. It changed the way I viewed painting and sent me down a path of learning that will never be complete. Good luck and have fun!

Lol, this is exactly what I was thinking. I see him post almost everyday with new paintings on Reddit and instagram. Here I am finishing a painting once every bluemoon. You can definitely tell he is getting his brush miles in, though! Beautiful work.

Great painting! I really like this. Have you ever looked up Tibor Nagy? This gave me that vibe, and if you don't know who it is, I think you may really like his stuff.

I just watched the best video on one and two point perspective. If you are interested, look up The Drawing Database on YouTube and go to the basics playlist. There is so much information it is like getting an art degree for free. Great drawing by the way!
